Tip of the Month: Importance of Pedaling Cadence
Cadence refers to the number of revolutions per minute (rpm) that a cyclist is turning the pedals on a bicycle.
Riders typically have a preferred cadence at which they feel most comfortable, and on bicycles with many gears it is possible to stick to a favorite cadence at a wide range of speeds. Recreational and casual cyclists typically cycle around 50-60 rpm since this is very similar to the cadence at which most people walk.
Ideally, you should aim for a cadence of around 80-90 rpm.
So, why is cadence so important? Pedaling at a higher cadence will allow you to ride your bike longer with less fatigue versus pedaling with a low cadence and putting too much pressure on your joints and tendons. If you are experiencing knee pain, it may be that you need to increase your pedal cadence.
Another reason that cadence is so important is because at higher cadences, it is much easier to accelerate than at a lower cadence. Even for a recreational rider this is important. If you are riding in a high gear and pedaling at a slow rate it is much easier to get started again after a stop in a lower gear than in a high gear.
If you are a new rider, allow yourself time to adjust to riding at a higher cadence. Moving your legs at a high cadence does take some getting used to, but over time you will become a more efficient rider and enjoy your bike more. Many bicycle speedometers that mount on a handlebar offer cadence as a feature. This makes it easy to see what your cadence is at a glance.

Product Review: Saris T-Rax Pro Whether you ride off-road, race locally, enjoy the Greenway, or travel with your family, the Saris T- Rax Pro is the perfect rack for your biking endeavors!
These racks can carry up to 4 or 5 bikes with ease. Saris has built- in anti-sway bars so bikes won't bump into each other while in transit. Ratcheting hold-down straps safely secure the bikes to the rack.
Each rack comes with a "Hassle Free Hitch" that allows for installation in just seconds without any tools.
As a convenience, both the locking hitch pin and the integrated bike lock are like-keyed. The rugged 2.5-inch steel tubing reduces flex and Saris' Hitch-Tite design eliminates wobble.
When not in use, the arms of the rack fold down and out of the way. Plus, the entire rack tilts away from the vehicle so you can easily reach the cargo area. As with all Saris products, each T-Rax Pro is made in the USA and comes with a Lifetime Warranty against defects. While we typically only stock the 2" receiver hitch version, Saris makes all of their hitch racks in an 1 1/4" version and these can be special- ordered next day to our shop.
