Summer is here and it's riding season once again!  Make sure your bike is safe and ready to ride before hitting the roads or the trails this summer.  Our staff can make sure your bike is adjusted and in top shape so that all you have to do is ride.  Get your bike to us soon since we do book up quickly this time of year.

This month we offer some tips for one of the more common problems we see here in the shop: under-inflated tires.  We also profile a new type of grip that eliminates hand discomfort during riding.

As The Bicycle Wheel enters its 5th year of service to the Johns Creek community, we thank you for your business and look forward to serving you and your family in the years to come.

Happy Riding!

Saturday Morning Group Rides

Come join us for our 25-mile Saturday morning road ride.  You must have a road bike to participate.  The store will open at 7:15 AM for riders to get water and air.  The ride departs at 7:30AM sharp.  Pace averages 15 - 18mph.  Riders of all capabilities are welcome - we leave no one behind.

Tip of the Month:  Tire Inflation 101girl_repair

Improper tire pressure is perhaps the number one maintenance issue we encounter here in the shop.  You can greatly reduce your chance of getting flats and ride your bike much easier if your tires are inflated to the correct pressure.

Here are some points to note about tire pressure:

1.  Your tires will lose air over time.  This is because bicycle tubes are made of a porous rubber.  The "pores" in the rubber compound are much larger than that of an air molecule.  Because of this, a tire will go soft over time and need to be reinflated.

2.  You should air up your tires once every two weeks.  Always use a bike pump and never go to the gas station!  Gas station air compressors are set to such a high pressure (to inflate voluminous car tires) that they easily can burst a bicycle tire which is a much lower volume than an car tire.

3.  The sidewall of your bike tire will tell you the proper inflation pressure.  Always check the sidewall of the tire since different tires require different pressures.

4.  A properly inflated tire makes it harder for you to get a flat.  If you can push your thumb into the tire, imagine how easy it will be for a curb or a rock on the ground to puncture the tube and cause a flat when you are riding your bike.  The harder the tire, the harder it will be for something to penetrate through it.

5.  A properly inflated tire makes your bike much easier to ride!  The harder the tire, the lower the rolling resistance and the easier it is for you to pedal your bike.

New Product Review:  Ergon Grips

Do your hands hurt when you ride your bike?  If you're like most people, you experience some numbing of your hand at some point during your ride.  Although gel gloves help, they aren't always the best solution for the problem.

Ergon grips prevent numb fingers, painful hands and forearms - problems that many riders face. The cause of this is high pressure on the particularly sensitive areas of the palm and an incorrect hand position.

Due to their anatomically optimal design, Ergon grips provide a contact surface of 100%.  Regular grips only provide a contact surface of approximately 60%.  With increased contact surface, pressure is especially reduced in the area of the ulna nerve, thus decreasing the likelihood of numbness.

Furthermore, the anatomic form of Ergon grips corrects your hand position.  An incorrect hand position and overloading of the median nerve (a leading cause of carpal tunnel syndrome) are impossible as long as the grip is mounted correctly.

Although these grips are relatively new, we have had a great response from our customers that have tried them.  We just received a shipment of the two grips featured below, the GP1 and the GC2. The major difference is that the GC2 has an integrated bar end.

You can click on the pictures below to learn more about the grips.

Prices range from $40-60 for a pair and installation is free.  Stop in today and check out a pair of Ergons.  See how riding can be pain free again!
