Beating Rising
Food Prices
You've
probably noticed by now that food prices are on the rise! Increased prices of
ingredients, freight surcharges and other factors are causing our grocery bills
to go up! We planned for this situation and are now bottling our sauces in a
new, lighter glass bottle that not only reduces landfill waste, but also reduces
shipping weights by 20%!
Look for our beautiful new
bottle coming soon to your local stores. The transition will take awhile, so you
may notice both the original and new bottles on the shelf at the same time.
Meanwhile, the new bottles are already available in our online store and the shipping charges reflect this reduced shipping
weight. Read More

Reading
Labels 101 With childhood
obesity and Type 2 Diabetes becoming a major concern for Americans, Melanie
thought it would be a good idea to help you unfold the mysteries of food labels!
In each newsletter, she'll provide you with easy-to-implement tips for finding
healthy and fit foods for your family each time you shop!
Tip for Today Next time you go
to the grocery store, read a few labels on packaged foods. We challenge you to question
the ingredients. Ask yourself, what exactly is ... high fructose corn syrup ...
sodium benzoate ... xanthan gum ... and is it good for my family?
You can find answers to your questions by searching for
the ingredients online and reading a few articles about each ingredient. The problem is
that you can't always trust what you read online. We want to help you make
healthy selections, so please send your ingredients inquiries directly to
Melanie at melanie@bigacres.com. In
future newsletters and on our website, we'll offer definitions of various ingredients to help you
along.

We're Certified Green!
Earlier this year,
San Carlos Mayor Brad Lewis, awarded a proclamation and certificate to our
company recognizing our green practices in our San Carlos, California office. This certification is provided by the County of San Mateo and includes the
completion of an 11-page application and on-site audits of water, power, and
waste by our local public utility companies. Melanie's Fine Foods passed with
flying colors by changing lightbulbs to CFLs, using 30% or better recycled
materials in office paper, recycling junk faxes, mail and other consumables,
reducing product packaging, using recycled paper content in our labels,
etc.
In addition, in an
area where most families own at least 2 vehicles, our founder and President,
Melanie Yunk, shares one low-emission vehicle with her husband, Kent. The couple
finds it easy to do with Kent's ability to take the train to work each
day. The Yunks have employed green practices at home for many years and Melanie's was the 2nd company to become
certified in San Mateo County!
