Dear Friends and Family,

As the old saying goes, "April April (Month Of)showers bring May flowers". However, in some parts of the country, the rain came in March and the flowers are already in bloom.

Along with the wonderful blooming flowers, bushes and trees comes the dreaded pollen that affects our allergies...including the allergies of our furry friends, too!

Make sure you monitor your pet for health issues related to environmental allergens. Wash or wipe down their coat, from head to paw, on a regular basis during the Spring. This will help your pet feel better and keep additional allergens out of your home.

Food Allergies May Lead to Seizures

Dog and Cat with Food Bowl

If your pet has seizures, ask your vet to test him/her for food allergies. One of my dogs began to have seizures shortly after I brought him home from the shelter. I had my veterinarian perform a comprehensive allergy test (using a blood sample) and discovered that he had many food-related allergies, including to chicken and rice, which were both in the food that he was eating.

The company that provided the results from the allergy test also provided a list of foods (canned and dry) and treats that he would be able to eat safely. I switched his food to one of those on the list and he hasn't had another seizure. That was over six years ago.

Food allergies may not always be the cause of seizures, but it is worth investigating with your veterinarian.

Disaster Preparedness Plans for Animals
Earthquake

In light of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the flooding here in the United States, and several other natural disasters we've seen in the news lately, we are all reminded that we must have a disaster preparedness plan in place for ourselves and for our animals.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) provides articles on disaster preparedness for pets, horses and livestock. To read more about disaster preparedness plans and the elements that should be included in your plan for your animals, please click on the respective links above.
