Dear Friends and Family,

Buzz with TimFall is here! This year is simply flying by.

October 31st is Halloween. If you have children that go trick-or-treating for candy, please ensure that your pets don't have access to any chocolate, nuts or artificially sweetened candy. These can all be harmful and potentially deadly to your pets.

The Importance of Providing ID Tags and Chips for Your Pets: A True Story

I recently found a 3-legged female Boxer. She was crossing back and forth over a very busy road during the evening rush ho
Boxerur. I stopped my car and, through communicating with her, convinced her that I wasn't going to hurt her. Within five or so minutes, she rolled over on her back and let me put a leash around her neck. Then I put her in my car and drove her to the nearest vet that had a micro-chip scanner. To my surprise, she didn't have a micro-chip. In addition, she didn't have a collar with ID tags.

Since I didn't know anything about her, I communicated with her to ask her what her name was and asked her to show me, through an image, what her house looked like, the family members she lived with and whether she was happy in that family. She told me that her name was Sophie, that she lived in a gray house, that she lived with a couple and their two young children and that while the kids loved her, she was more or less "just a dog" in their family.

While the information that she shared with me was a lot to go on, it didn't provide me with where this family lived. So, I decided to keep her with us overnight. In the morning, we checked a few "missing pet" web sites, called around to the local shelter, local animal control and six local veterinarian's offices. To my surprise, no one had called about her being missing. Since there aren't many 3-legged Boxers around, the sixth vet's office that was called said they had a patient matching her description. They called the owner and found out that, indeed, this dog was theirs.

I drove her back to her home and while her name wasn't Sophie, I found out that her name was Roxie. I thought that was a pretty close match to what she said her name was. I was also able to confirm with her owner that the other information that she shared with me was exactly correct - the color of her house, the people that comprised her human family, and, by the gentleman's reaction to her coming home, that she was "just a dog" in their family.

I suggested to the gentleman that they get a micro-chip for Roxie so that if she got out again, it would be easier for someone to locate them. After all, I found out from him that the way she lost her back leg was through a car hitting her when she was younger.

I also said that they could keep the collar that we bought for her and suggested that he get ID tags for her.

Unfortunately, I learned that within a few days Roxie got out again and this time was found by someone else. The owners had not taken my advice, nor have they bothered looking for their dog.

So, my suggestion for everyone is to get ID tags and a collar for your cats and dogs -- whether they go outside on a regular basis or not. Since collars can sometimes come off when a pet gets loose, I also recommend getting them micro-chipped. This will definitely help anyone, including animal control, if they are trying to locate you once they find your missing pet.
