Wagging Tales Newsletter

Volume 2 Issue 8
August 2009

Dear Friends and Family,

Tim with HorsesCan you believe that summer is almost over? I cannot believe it is August already.

As summer wraps up, many of you are trying to get last minute vacations scheduled. Sometimes that means being able to bring your dogs and cats with you while others may be staying home with caretakers. If you are taking your pets with you, please remember to let them know that they are going with you, what they need to do while on the trip and why it will be a good thing for them. This will help to alleviate some of the anxiety that they may have about being gone from their home environment.

If you decide to leave them at home while you are away, please remember to let them know where you are going, when you'll be back and what they are to do while you are gone (e.g. take care of the other pets, watch the house, etc.).

Whether your pet is going with you or staying home while you are on vacation, you may want to introduce Bach's Rescue Remedy (flower essence) to their water. Rescue Remedy serves as a general calming agent for pets and people alike.

The Loss of a Pet
Paw Print
It goes without saying that the hardest part about having a pet as part of your family is when they pass away.

Unfortunately, many of my friends and family experienced losing their pet last month. Therefore, I thought I would share some insights about what I have learned from the animals about the transition process in this month's newsletter.

After a pet's life force (soul) has left his/her body, they spend time in a regeneration period. This can take a few hours, a few days or longer depending on the animal.
Once their soul has fully regenerated, they will come back to "visit" with their families. You may see them for a brief moment out of your peripheral vision, you may hear them bark or meow or you may sense their presence when you are about to fall asleep. They can also come back to you in your dreams.

The most interesting thing that they do is to leave their imprints / teachings behind with other animals that live in the house. This can be both good and bad imprints. For example, I had two Pomeranians, Neecie and Baby. When Baby passed away, she left her fear of thunderstorms with Neecie. Neecie was about 10 years old when Baby transitioned and until then was never scared of thunderstorms. I have also had others tell me of similar experiences with their pets.

There are a couple of wonderful books that can help ease the pain of losing a pet. The first is Saying Goodbye to Your Angel Animals by Allen & Linda Anderson. The second is Animals in Spirit by Penelope Smith. I have read both of these books and found them to be very insightful.

The grief associated with losing a pet is handled differently by everyone. Because I believe this to be an important part of sharing your life with a pet, I have a dedicated page on my web site that talks about the loss of a
pet. If you have experienced losing your pet or know someone that has, you may want to take a look at this page.
