Cancer Survivor Day Art lls logo

The Power of Art: A Cancer Survivors Day Celebration at The Wellness Community

National Cancer Survivor's Day was celebrated in artistic style at TWC on June 1 when nearly 50 cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers used pens, pencils, markers, and paint to express their feelings about themselves and their loved ones.  Facilitator Novella Williams and Art Therapist Lisa Cohen guided men and women, young and old (6 to 80 yrs.+), in discovering their own sense of freedom and self-expression.  "It's not only about creating," says Novella, "It's about releasing."  Art releases stress and encourages self-expression in a way that sometimes talking cannot do.
The centerpiece of the day was the creation of the Survivor Wall. "We are all taught not to write on walls," says Novella.  On June 1, that rule not only went out the window, it went literally on the wall, around the wall, and up the wall.  At first, many participants were hesitant to draw on the wall.  Gradually, however, they became more adventurous, and in the end, some even climbed a ladder to paint colorful, heartfelt pictures and messages as high as possible.
Chef Pam Manresa topped off the day with tasty finger food and two luscious cakes.  "In the end," says Novella, "no one wanted to leave!"

New TWCYP Celebrates Its Opening with
Wine Tasting Event

There's a new game in town, and it's called TWCYP, The Wellness Community Young Professionals.  TWCYP is the brainchild of Julie Schottenstein, daughter of Board Member, Debra Schottenstein.  Julie's idea was to take advantage of the Internet, particularly the social networking site, Facebook, to create a new group of young professionals that would support The Wellness Community.  Julie's vision was to conduct monthly networking events around Miami for the purposes of supporting TWC, having fun, and networking.
Over 100 people attended the kickoff party on June 19 at Cavas Wine Tasting Room on Brickell Key.  The fee to attend was only $20 ($15 if you registered in advance). Cavas provided hors d'oeuvres and cards with $10 on them so that attendees could sample 80 different wines.
"I see so many other organizations that have Internet based young professionals groups," says Julie. "I felt that TWC was really missing out on a opportunity to reach a whole new demographic."
If you are interested in joining TWCYP or getting information on future events, you can find the group on Facebook listed as The Wellness Community-Greater Miami or contact Karen Blaire at TWC-Greater Miami, 305-668-5900 to put your name on our mailing list.

The Wellness Community Announces New Collaboration with Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market, Pinecrest, purveyor of fresh produce and outstanding prepared foods, is collaborating with TWC-Greater Miami to provide financial support and nutritious goodies for our participants.
Each month Whole Foods Market gives TWC a $200 gift card to be used either for our nutrition classes or any other programs for which we need "gastronomic" support.  On May 9, TWC was the beneficiary of the Whole Foods Market Mother's Day event, which featured champagne, chocolate, and cheese.  Whole Foods Market also gives TWC coupons to pass out to its participants.
Whole Foods Market Pinecrest is also home to one of our greatest supporters, Chef Pam Manresa.  Chef Manresa regularly conducts cooking classes at Whole Foods Market, Pinecrest, featuring the healthful, delizioso, foods she has so often served to our own participants at our TWC facility.
Whole Foods Market and TWC both realize that we are partners in serving up support and good health in our community.  We continue to be grateful to Whole Foods Market for its overwhelming support of our programs and our participants.
