The Wellness Community Partners with the
 Lance Armstrong Foundation

In 1982, Dr. Harold Benjamin founded The Wellness Community to help men and women facing a cancer diagnosis take an active role in their own recovery. The concept was called the "patient active" approach which is wholeheartedly embraced by the medical community. The Wellness Community has stepped to the forefront by recognizing that patients need just as much assistance during and after treatment as well. It was once thought that after cancer treatment a person would easily return to his or her normal life. The reality is that the transition can be very difficult. To meet the emotional and psychological needs of people who have completed treatments, The Wellness Community and The Lance Armstrong Foundation have teamed up to create a new program: LiveWell! Beyond Cancer.

The Live Well! program is a six-week program with a different emphasis each week. Session 1 is an introduction to the program called " Get Back to Wellness: Take Control of Your Survivorship." Session 2 focuses on the role and importance of exercise in survivorship. Session 3 is called "Emotional Health & Wellbeing." Participants are introduced to coping mechanisms that are healthy and positive. Session 4 looks at the role of "Nutrition Beyond Cancer." Participants are encouraged to make healthy food choices that are nutrient rich to control their weight. Session 5, ""Medial Mangagement Beyond Cancer" takes a look at ongoing issues that may or may not be related to cancer. Finally during session 6, "Life Beyond Cancer: Next Steps Towards Survivorship," participants are guided toward living a life that is rich and positive.

The Wellness Community- Greater Miami has already completed its first "Live Well! Beyond Cancer" program with 22 participants. It was a resounding success.

The Wellness Community - Greater Miami

Raises Over $240,000 for Cancer Patients

On Tuesday, February 26th The Wellness Community's Heart & Star Award Dinner was back for a seventh year. The Heart & Star Dinner presented by Advanced Medical Specialties, Island Gardens and Nordstrom honored three outstanding community members and raised more than $240,000 for The Wellness Community. "It was great that the electricity came back on.  Even after the blackout we had an amazing turnout that allowed us to make this event a success," said Lynn Mitchell, Executive Director, about the event.

The Four Seasons Hotel was the stage for a moving fund-raising evening emceed by Mark Schumacher. The honorees, cancer survivor Debbie Curtin, developer and philanthropist Mehmet Bayraktar, and surgical oncologist Dr. Robert DerHagopian, shared their stories of survival, generosity and dedication with 400 guests.

After the award presentations Geevy Thomas, Executive Vice-President for Nordstrom, surprised everyone by challenging the audience to raise more for the free cancer support programs at The Wellness Community by matching Nordstrom's gift of $20,000.  Nordstrom's challenge was met with amazing generosity from the audience who matched an additional $51,000!

The Wellness Community-Greater Miami

                  Announced New Board Leadership

The Wellness Community-Greater Miami's new Board Chairman is Rudy Kranys.  Rudy has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2002.  Rudy's reasons for becoming involved in The Wellness Community are very personal.  He has met many people who are unable to cope with the emotional problems, fear, and indecisions that accompany a diagnosis of cancer.  "These people have no one to talk to.  They need a place to go," says Rudy.  "The Board at The Wellness Community is a small, very committed, active board.  It's a board on which I can make a difference."  Rudy, who is now retired, is the past president of the Angiographic Product Division of Cordis Corporation.  He is the father of four girls and eight grandchildren.

The new Board Vice- Chair is Adam Spiegel.  Adam is a partner in the firm of Morrison, Brown, Argiz & Farra in the tax and accounting group.  Adam's mother is a cancer survivor and a long-time member of the American Cancer Society.  Like Rudy, Adam was searching for a young Board.  "The Wellness Community is growing," says Adam, "and I wanted to be a part of something where we could grow together."  Adam is recently married to Tere and is a new dad to eight year old Antonio.

Pamela Katz Zakheim, M. Ed.
President & Founder of The Wellness Community -
Greater Miami

Our Founder Joins the National Board of The Wellness Community

The founder of The Wellness Community-Greater Miami, Pam Zakheim, has joined the Board of Directors of The Wellness Community-National.

Pam has a background in both business reorganization and counseling psychology and is unique in the history of The Wellness Community (TWC), having founded two Wellness Communities.  She founded The Wellness Community-Greater Boston, which opened in 1993, as the result of a request from her long-time friend, Gilda Radner, who wrote enthusiastically about her experiences at The Wellness Community in her best-selling book, It's Always Something.  After moving to Florida in 1996, Pam spearheaded the creation of The Wellness Community-Greater Miami, which opened in 2001, in response to her husband's cancer diagnosis.  "My husband is the founder of the Pediatric Cardiology division of Miami Children's Hospital.  We are both well educated in medical matters, and we knew that his cancer was treatable, and that he would be fine.  Nevertheless, when we received the news that he had cancer, we both needed the support and education that I knew was available at any Wellness Community, so we determined that once his treatments were finished, we would open a Wellness Community in Miami."

As a member of the National Board, Pam joins a group of prestigious leaders who help to oversee and guide national initiatives that assist and support local Wellness Communities.  The Wellness Community is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has become a recognized leader in the delivery of psycho-social support services for individuals affected by cancer.  There are currently 24 facilities throughout the United States, with 3 additional facilities currently in development.  In addition, there are two facilities abroad, one in Tel Aviv, Israel and the other in Tokyo, Japan.  The Wellness Commnity has also created The Virtual Wellness Community on the internet (www.thewellnesscommunity.org).

Pam is extremely modest about her enormous accomplishments, but does admit that she is a good example of how "one person can make a huge difference in this world".
