Greetings!

Greetings and welcome to the final round of Shape Up & Go! Let's talk turkey. To date, our wellness champions have actually lost the equivalent of 500 10-lb. turkeys.  Shape Up & Go!  has generated another remarkable 5,000 lb.- plus weight loss, and we're not done yet. YOU still have two weeks to go, and in this issue you even get a few more tips to help you pass on all those dangerous holiday goodies. (These are great tips in our minds, but you'll have to be the judge).

More great news: at the end of Round 3, each participant in the Fruit & Veggie division was at 4.5 servings per day. Way to go, healthy snackers! You began Round 1 at nearly one serving per day, so you've more than quadrupled your healthy intake.

We salute all our Team Captains this week, too! You are our ambassadors of fitness. If it weren't for your dogged determination and your selfless willingness to lead your teams, we'd never be able to achieve these results. You have our gratitude and admiration. You also have just two short weeks left to round up any teammates who may have lapsed in reporting and get yourselves in the running for some amazing prizes. It's now or never, so let's step it up and finish strong!

In this week's comedy break, we pay homage to the ties that bind...like Fruit of the Loom, Hanes and Jockey:

When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure."
"Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised, "Mine says I'm 4 to 6."

Make sure you send your jokes to youdocs@gmail.com.

We wish you and yours a wonderful holiday!

Pass (On) the Holiday Goodies - Part 2
Welcome to the finale of Dr. Mike's Holiday Eating Survival Tips.  Some food for thought-did you know the typical 50-year-old is now 12 pounds heavier than the typical 50-year-old in 1996?  And that's adjusted for gender and height!  Here's more on how to beat those odds during this high-calorie time of year:

Don't go hungry to Thanksgiving Dinner, or to any holiday party. Many starve all day Thursday so they can splurge on three pieces of three different pies. While the Clinic has the best cardiac outcomes in the country, we'd rather you not join the ranks of Holiday Heart Syndrome patients that emergency room staffs know all too well this time of year.

Choose the really good stuff on the party tray. Go for the fruit, veggies and nuts, and pass aging on the cheese and pastries. (Don't even give them to the dog in the room. He doesn't deserve to become impotent either-unless he has peed on your shoes!)

Don't be afraid to tell your relatives no thanks when they pass around something you know you shouldn't eat - like their signature Mac'n'Cheese casserole. They may pout for a few minutes but they will move on.

The upcoming holiday season is a time to gather with family & friends, co-workers, and clients in what can be tantamount to a sixty day marathon of appetizer trays, caffeinated beverages and borderline sleep deprivation. It's no wonder we're all so tired - the holidays are hard work!  Check out these simple tips to help keep your body fueled, mind clear and spirits bright as we head into 2010 and beyond:

Well, Isn't That Convenient!
Let's face it, just about the only way of making drive-thru chain restaurant food healthy is by heading through the drive-thru on your bicycle. Fast foods are notoriously unhealthy and judging by their ever expanding menus - America is still not over its obsession with super-sizing meals. But before you place your order for the value meal, take a longer look at the menu - you'll see some items that have sound nutritional value, and you won't have to loosen your seat belt.

Motivation: Let's Give Thanks
Has your team captain, a particular member of your team or your entire team been your sole motivating factor for staying on course, not giving up, and helping you meet your goals? If so, now is a great time to give thanks.

Giving thanks is a wonderful way to show someone you appreciate them, and it is another powerful tool of positive energy. Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success."

Your team has worked hard together planning and achieving health goals, getting each other through good times and bad, and being a strong sounding board when you all needed it. You got this far from the continual support and motivation from each and every member on your team. So take a moment and humbly give thanks. Or not so humbly-brag about how much it meant to you!!!
