A Record Breaking Accomplishment!

Greetings!

Greetings to all of our Shape Up & Go! mega-stars! We're about to head into the home stretch of our challenge. To date, we've witnessed some amazing results and transformations. But did you know that our Fruit & Veggie Tracker has helped us surpass a currently held Guinness World Record? You didn't?

Currently, the Guinness World Record for the "Largest Salad" is held by the people of Moshav Sde Warburg, an Israeli community. They prepared a tasty and healthy 22,572 pound salad as part of a national celebration. Now that's a lot of crudités!

The new 'unofficial' record set by Cleveland Clinic participants of Shape Up & Go! is the equivalent of a 38,000 pound fruit & veggie salad! As a group, you've noshed on over 77,000 cups of record breaking goodness. Bop a Bow!!! (That's a 60's phrase, and I can't stop saying it when  I see these numbers.)   We congratulate you all for your dedication and commitment to your health.

In this week's employee spotlight, we salute those hearty souls who never shy away from a challenge! We are taking a moment to applaud those rare wellness mavericks who aren't about to let something like 236 other teams stop them from reaching their goals!

We're tipping our hats to the 'Cookie Monsters' from Euclid Hospital and their MONSTROUS 235 spot leap in the Weight Loss % standings! Congratulations!

Keep up the great work and we'll see you next week---inside on the treadmills at Walker or Fairview or Parker or outside on path!

Yours in Health,

Grocery Shopping Savvy
With the superfluous choice of brand names for each item we purchase at the grocery store, it can all seem overwhelming. Manufacturers have become increasingly savvy about promoting the positive aspects of their products, while concealing or downplaying the bad. It's up to you, as a savvy Shape Up & Go! sleuth to seek out the best quality, nutrition, and value for your hard earned money. But do you know what to be on the lookout for? We've got some tips to help uncover the good, and shelve the bad. Read more about smart shopping on a budget.
Broccoli Baked Potatoes
6 medium Idaho potatoes
3 stalks broccoli
¼ C skim milk
½ C shredded light cheddar cheese

  1. Scrub potatoes. Make shallow slits around the middle, as if you were cutting the potatoes in half lengthwise. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 60 minutes until done, depending on size.

  2. Peel broccoli stems. Steam whole stalks until just tender, and chop finely.

  3. Carefully slice potatoes in half and scoop the insides into a bowl with the broccoli. Add milk, 3/8 cup cheese and pepper to taste. Mash together until mixture is pale green with dark green flecks.

  4. Heap into potato jackets, and sprinkle with remaining cheese.

  5. Return to oven and heat through (about 15 minutes).

It's a Salt Assault
According the CDC, most people consume 4,000 mg of sodium per day! That's 1,700 mg greater than the recommended dietary guideline of 2,300 mg. Sodium can quickly derail even the most committed nutrition buff. For many of us, we should be following a low-sodium diet. But before you push yourself back from the table - take a look at some of these fresh ways to flavor your foods.

Motivation: Don't Give Up
Winston Churchill once said, "Never give in! Never give in! Never, never, never. Never -- in anything great or small, large or petty -- never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense."

These are strong words you can use on a daily basis to stay motivated and meet your goals. You've come this far on your fitness journey - stay strong! Persistence will continue to play a key role in your success. You and your team will most likely face some ups - and some downs - but staying on a clear path with conviction and persistence will help you get over any hurdles.

By now you have gained the knowledge and skills to help you overcome stumbling blocks. And you've designed specific goals and strategies and MORE SUPPORT THAN THE USUAL BRA HAS. SO KEEP  IT UP!  Michael Roizen, M.D., Chief Wellness Officer
