Greetings!

Greetings to all of you Shape Up & Go superstars! Have you managed to surprise yourself with exactly how active you are becoming? It's easier than you thought to be healthy and make good Go! food choices. Round 1 was clearly dominated by the Regional Hospitals who took the top three spots in both Pedometer Steps and Weight Loss! Teams Drauma Center from Fairview and Go Lite-Lee from South Pointe are tearing it up. We're delighted by your success! Thank you for being such wellness champions. All our teams are off to a great start and we can already tell you're in it to win it! After all, with such great prizes at stake - and your own benefits, who wouldn't go the extra mile or three?

Keep in mind that one mile is about 2,000 steps. Many of you are walking more than four miles a day after two rounds. Challenge yourself with an increased goal in this upcoming round! Try for 12,000 steps per day and take advantage of this magnificent Fall weather to go for some brisk walks! We're predicting this will be the year you raise the bar for yourselves and everyone else.

On that happy note we offer you this snippet of exercise humor:

You know it is time to resume exercising when...

  • You try to do a few pushups and discover that certain body parts refuse to leave the floor.
  • Your children look through your wedding album and want to know who mom's first husband was.
  • You get winded just saying the words "10 kilometer run".
  • You come to the conclusion that, if you were really meant to touch your toes each morning, they would have been put somewhere around your knees.
  • You analyze your body honestly and decide what you should develop first is your sense of humor.
  • You step on a talking scale and it says, "Come back when you are alone".

Keep up the great work and we'll see you next week!

Now that we have you attention, we hope you enjoy the joke of the week that was submitted by Diane Woods.

Subject: Browns Fan
A guy walks into a bar wearing a Browns jersey and carrying a cat that also has a Browns jersey on with a little Browns helmet on his head, too.

The guy says to the bartender, "Can my cat and I watch the Browns game here? My TV at home is broke, and my cat and I always watch the game together."

The bartender replies, "Normally, cats wouldn't be allowed in the bar, but it's not very busy in here right now, so you and the cat can have a seat at the end of the bar. But, if there's any trouble with you or the cat, I'll have to ask you to leave."

The guy agrees, and he and his cat start watching the game. Pretty soon the  Browns kick a field goal and the excited cat jumps up on the bar and walks down the bar and gives everyone a high five.

The bartender says, "Hey, that's pretty cool! What does he do for a touchdown?"

The guy answers, "I don't know, I've only had him for 5 years."

Keep up the great work, keep the jokes coming, and most of all keep smiling!

Eat More Fruits & Veggies!
Fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov

strawberriesMost fruits and vegetables are naturally low in calories and provide essential nutrients and dietary fiber. They may also play a role in preventing certain chronic diseases. When compared to people who eat only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts, as part of a healthy diet, tend to have reduced risk of chronic diseases. These diseases include stroke, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and perhaps cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

Leaf that Alone!
In 2008 in the United States, about 617,000 people suffered injuries caused by rakes. Yes, rakes. <Source:U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission>

For many of us, autumn is our favorite season. It's brisk in the morning, and slowly warms to a summery temperature in the afternoon. It's hard to resist breaking out the seasonal cider, pulling on a sweater, and jumping into a huge pile of leaves. As we gleefully frolic, it's usually with a combination of nostalgia of our childhood and the anticipation of the upcoming holidays. Ah-yes, it's the perfect time of year.

As long as those enormous mounds of leaves aren't in your yard, that is! Look at those gutters on the house! They are overflowing with autumns' cruel bounty, just waiting to be cleaned! Did we mention those bulbs need to be covered, and the chimney needs to be emptied? When wistfulness and physical chores collide, you had better have some safe practices in place to prevent injuries that can last well beyond the season.

Thankfully, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has some tips to help us still enjoy the season. Click to read more.
Motivation - Visualize Your Goals
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

If you want to make positive, lasting change in your life, it helps to spend some time thinking about motivation. What are your reasons for wanting to strength train? What are your personal goals? What obstacles do you anticipate and how might you overcome them? It's also a good idea to visualize your success and consider how you might celebrate your achievements.
Exercise for Less: Inexpensive ways to
Stay in Shape
banner Exercise is often perceived as something done most effectively in a first-class gym with expensive, state-of-the-art equipment. It is this perception that creates a barrier to exercise. Certainly, financial restrictions are a major limitation to exercise. Gym memberships can cost hundreds of dollars per month, and home treadmills, elliptical machines and universal resistance equipment can reach into the thousands of dollars to purchase. However, a lack of finances doesn't have to mean a lack of exercise. There are many inexpensive ways to keep yourself in shape.
