Dear Friends,

We've hit a period where we could stagnate or get bored, so we want you to stay encouraged and keep on encouraging your team members.

GO! Nuts (not to prematurely publicize a food choice we will encourage for Halloween) -- communicate with your team and push yourself to meet the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of this campaign.

If you are close to meeting your original goal-congratulations! Keep going longer than Wheel of Fortune and Finish as Well as LeBron! If you are falling short of your goals, consider revising them to make them more realistic and work on those. Remember, it's only too late when you are a few feet under.

And now we interrupt this message for our Joke of the Week--no political affiliation intended here, just a commentary on our time that caused us to laugh.  (Keep submitting your jokes to youdocs@gmail.com)

The Bail Out as seen by the ever astute Maxine.

Maxine"BAIL EM OUT!????

Hell, back in 1990, the Government seized the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada for tax evasion and, as required by law, tried to run it. They failed and it closed.  Now we are trusting the economy of our country and our banking system to the same nit-wits who couldn't make money running a bordello and selling whiskey!"

Please, no political comments back...it was just to make you laugh in this difficult economy--and to encourage you to enjoy health, 'cause if you have your health, your family and a job at Cleveland Clinic, you are doing pretty darn well.  Now talk about that with your buddy--'cause we really are lucky to be here and be able to make our steps count for others, our buddies and ourselves.

Our hope is your participation in this competition (not just the joke one--the Shape Up & Go! one) will help you feel proud of your accomplishments and that success of your team and you will motivate you to continue. While this competition will be ending soon, getting healthy and staying that way as a buddy to a team member and for yourself brings you rewards forever.

We should tell you about another new program of the wellness institute that is changing people forever--Lifestyle 180.  We keep on trying to improve your health and that of your fellow CC employee  in new ways. With approximately 45% of Americans diagnosed with at least one chronic disease, and over 80% of chronic disease due to modifiable risk factors such as tobacco, physical inactivity, stress and poor food choices choices, we can help.

Lifestyle 180 addresses chronic disease through easy and fun lifestyle changes--a structured systematic approach to nutrition, physical activity and stress management in a way that is at once attainable, practical and engaging.

Currently, we are working with patients who have diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and hypercholesterolemia. We will be adding different disease states slowly, initially multiple sclerosis and prostate cancer. So if you know someone on our Employee Health Plan (EHP) who could benefit from such help, be a buddy and tell them about Lifestyle 180 (1-216-297-8511).

And along with that feeling of pride of being here at the Clinic and helping our buddies and others, take a moment tonight and be appreciative of all you have. Being mindful of our blessings, including the important people in our life, adds to our health, too. So, write a thank you note or call someone and tell them you appreciate the difference they make in your life. No buttering up--just express honest thanks.

Yours In Health,
The Cleveland Clinic Employee Wellness Team

CDC: Visualizing Your Goals
(edited of course-it's too long now, but it was more than TWICE as long-who writes these things-are they paid by the word?)

One powerful tool for building self-confidence is visualization. Just imagine the changes or goals you're working to achieve. By visualizing in detail your successful execution of each step toward the goal, you create, modify, or strengthen brain pathways important in coordinating your muscles for the visualized activity. The technique is useful in many areas-from avoiding anxiety during a stressful situation, to meeting a deadline, losing weight or in strength training activities.

· Identify the goal you want to visualize--for example, walking a golf course, or taking the stairs for every up and down of 4 flights or less.

· Find a comfortable place to sit and eliminate all distractions-no phone, television, etc.

· Close your eyes and focus on feeling relaxed. Free your mind of intruding thoughts.

· Now, imagine yourself on the golf course. Create a picture in your mind of the place-the sights, sounds, and smells. Imagine a perfect day, picture yourself with your favorite golfing friends, talking and laughing. Now visualize yourself starting and setting off to walk the whole course.

· Take a moment to feel the pleasure and excitement of achieving this goal.

· Then imagine yourself walking from hole to hole, enjoying the sunshine, the views, the fresh air, the good company and excellent play.

· Finally, visualize yourself finishing the course and feeling great, both physically and emotionally.
