Dear Friends,
As we progress through the second half of this healthy lifestyle competition, the most important thing we can do is keep our motivation levels as high as they were when we began.
If you find yourself losing steam, re-connect with your team members and gain energy from them. If you are still going strong but see any of your team members slowing down, help by giving them an extra push, inviting them to join you on a walk or at the gym, or sending them an encouraging message.
We interrupt this message for the JOKE of the Week, sent by John C (name withheld by request-keep the jokes coming to youdocs@gmail.com--as you'll see, we need more each week)
A young lawyer was defending a wealthy businessman in a complicated lawsuit. Unfortunately, the evidence was against his client, and the lawyer feared the worst.
So the lawyer asked the senior partner of the law firm if it would be appropriate to send the judge a box of Havana cigars. The partner was horrified. "The judge is an honorable man", the partner exclaimed. "If YOU do THAT, I can GUARANTEE you'll lose the case!"
Weeks later, the judge ruled in favor of the lawyer's client. The partner took the lawyer to lunch to congratulate him. "Aren't you glad you didn't send those cigars to the judge?" the partner asked. "But I DID send them," replied the lawyer. "I just enclosed the PLAINTIFF'S lawyer's business card!"
If we rely on each other for support and strength, we will all have the chance to feel the joy of success at the end of this campaign.
Yours In Health, The Cleveland Clinic Employee Wellness Team

MyPyramid.gov: When You "Order Out"
|
For many of us, prepared foods such as pizza, rotisserie chicken, burgers and other takeout food are a way of life. These small steps help deliver good-for-you meals.
Smart Requests
· At sandwich shops, never go red....ask for leaner cuts of turkey, chicken or vegetarian, and all without cheese. And, extra lettuce and tomato; and 100% whole-wheat, oatmeal or rye bread. None of those other breads---go to another shop and tell the owner you'll be back when they change their bread! The Clinic's cafeterias will soon have magnificent 100% whole wheat rolls--thanks, Alan.
· When it's Chinese night, ask for brown rice, extra vegetables in the entree and a side of steamed broccoli. And no King Pao or any of his fried relatives--most Chinese noodles are dried in saturated fat, so avoid those unless you like impotence or wrinkles!
· Try fast food options of grilled chicken sandwiches--or even better, salads with low-saturated fat, low-calorie dressings, cups or bags of fresh fruit, skim milk, 100% fruit juice and bottled water. Look for low-sodium options.
· Make your pizza a veggie, with toppings like mushrooms, peppers and onions. Ask for 100% whole-wheat crust and half the cheese.
Easy At-Home Add-Ons
· Serve a side of baby carrots and cherry tomatoes. Or quickly toss a salad made with pre-washed lettuce or spinach.
· Zap veggies in the microwave for a fast and colorful boost to your meal.
· Warm up your meal with ready-to-heat vegetable soup.
· Keep the fruit bowl stocked and within arm's reach. Or, keep a few cans of peaches, pears or fruit cocktail packed in juice in the refrigerator. Pop one open for a speedy side dish or dessert.
· End your meal with pudding made with fat-free milk-and boost your calcium intake, too.
· Drink fat-free milk, water, or tea or coffee with your meal.

Weekly Employee Wellness Update

National Start! Walking Day is Wednesday, April 8, 2009.
This is the day that adults nationwide can make the pledge to Start! walking and to become active and heart healthy, especially in the workplace. Cleveland Clinic and the American Heart Association are teaming up to give employees the opportunity to walk.
On main campus you can participate at anytime that day in a 1 mile walk from 7am till 6pm. The route goes through the skyways and Euclid Avenue (rain plan will stay in skyways). Print out a map or pick up a map at any rest stop table. Get your map signed at each table and be eligible to win hundreds of prizes from Employee Wellness - including beach towels, t-shirts, and coffee mugs! Rest stop tables will be in Taussig lobby, Glickman Great Hall (near Blueberg hanging sculpture), main skyway, Cole Eye lobby, and the Walker Building fitness center.
If you work off main campus, you can celebrate National Start! Walking Day by going for a walk with your team. Also, look for information in the coming months for outdoor walks at your site. For a map and more information see the Employee Wellness Website at www.cchs.net/wellness
