Dear Friends,
Your Shape Up & Go! wristbands are powerful. Are you wearing yours every day?
On a community level, these wristbands are declaring to your friends, family and co-workers that you and your teammates are committed to a healthier future. They speak to the tremendous time and energy that we have all been investing into improving our health and shape. And they proclaim that we have joined together, as a community, to achieve real change.
On a team level, they serve to unite us. They create a sense of teamwork, togetherness and mutual dependence. They identify you as you engage in activities with your team.
On a personal level, the Shape Up & Go! wristbands are designed to serve as a daily reminder that you have made a commitment to improving your personal health through nutritious eating and physical activity.
All at Cleveland Clinic Employee Wellness thank you for your commitment to your community and its mission, and we encourage you to continue proudly wearing your wristband for the rest of the competition and beyond.
Yours In Health, The Cleveland Clinic Employee Wellness Team

"I
think this program is helpful and gets me motivated because I am on a
team. There is that component of accountability when a person belongs
to a team or exercises with someone else. I have started to do some
exercise tapes, too, as a result of this program. The team idea is the
key for me. I have done some other wellness activities and completed
the questionnaires but the team concept has been the motivator."
-Linda Clarke, Team Ms. Fits, Cardiovascular Research
"I
am an obese, sedentary, middle-aged, post-menopausal, pre-diabetic
woman! If you add my family history of heart and kidney disease I'm a
walking time bomb. But has this made me change much? No! And I was
becoming very unhappy with "me" for being so lazy about everything. So,
when ShapeUpandGo flashed on my screen I thought, "I think I can give
this a try." So I set my goals and decided I would work at it. Do I
walk 10,000 steps per day? Nope. But I am making sure to park farther
away, walk the halls a few extra times each day, and even take the
steps. And no, I don't do a formal work out, but just by walking more
I'm doing more than I've done in the past. My diet has changed and I am
even planning to give up bread for Lent (and that is no small feat!). I
will walk 10,000 steps before this program is over and I thank my team
mates for being so encouraging. Good luck to all the teams! We all win
by losing!"
-Anonymous
"I
like that you can set your own goals and work towards them at your own
pace. In previous programs, like Commit 10, you had to accomplish a
goal set by the program. Also, because our team captain and I are EHP
members, we can work out for free 4 days a week at the Walker Fitness
Center, and it's great. I feel much healthier since starting Shape Up
& Go! I've lost 8 pounds and feel wonderful. Shape Up & Go has
helped me make lifestyle changes that will lead to a healthier me!"
-John Pounardjian, Recruiting & Development Coordinator, Lerner Research Institute
"I
enrolled in Shape Up & Go! because it's a fun way to get healthier.
It's nice to get back in shape with a happy team that is competitive
and fun. Another Shape Up & Go! team we work with is creating some
added excitement for us by always bringing in cookies to tempt us! So
far we've resisted their efforts to sabotage our progress. Our team
spirit is great-- everyone pitches in to help each other."
-Somnath Bose, MD, Clinical Research Fellow, Outcomes Research

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Joke of the Week Submit your "candidate" to YOUDOCS@gmail.com and we'll select one to share.
What a marriage counselor can offer.
A husband and wife came in for counseling after 15 years of marriage. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the 15 years they had been married. She went on and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of un-met needs she had endured over the course of their marriage.
Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and, after asking the wife to stand, embraced and kissed her passionately. The woman fell silent and quietly sat down as though in a daze.
The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?"
He thought for a moment and replied, "Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish."

Motivation: Staying Positive
|
Maintain a healthy outlook
A great way to boost your spirits and maintain a high level of motivation is to keep a positive picture of your goal close by.
A picture, a sticky note on your desk, or even a mental vision of your goal will help you stay focused and energized to keep positive. When you put yourself in a positive frame of mind and then join with your team, together you can accomplish anything! If you can clearly see your goal, you can accomplish it. Surround yourself with positive images, listen to positive music, keep notes of encouragement with you-even choose a few favorite inspirational words to stick to your bathroom mirror!
And, always remember that your teammates are there to reinforce how far you've already come. Positive thoughts reap positive rewards!
