The Competition Has Begun!
Dear Friends,

With over 4,000 contestants stepping strong from across Cleveland Clinic, this promises to be a fun, challenging, and exciting competition.

Over the next 12 weeks, your team may lead you (of course you have to lead the rest of those people too) into a whole new world of energy--whether it's walking during lunch, taking the stairs, joining the Walker gym and braving that "oh so cold you wimp" weather to get there, or simply eating Go! Foods  together.

Shape Up & Go! is about team building and fostering a sense of community among your teammates. It's about an energetic  you, an energetic team, and an energetic community. Harnessing the power of teamwork to inspire you and your partners--you will change your attitudes and behaviors toward health.

Now the competition has begun, so set goals and party with walking etc. when you achieve them. We're going to stimulate you along the way. Each week during the campaign, you will receive this newsletter filled with helpful tips and recommendations from leading health experts, and Dr. Mike's irreverent remarks that were censored from the Plain Dealer (only kidding--just seeing if you were reading).

Dr. Mike hopes you've been eagerly waiting for this day--his team wants to kick your......... So clip on your pedometer, put on your green wristband, tie your shoelaces--and see if you can kick his!

Good luck to you and your team!

Yours in health,

The Cleveland Clinic Employee Wellness Team

Make the Commitment
TeamworkWe encourage you and your team members to print, sign, and post the Shape Up & Go! Team Contract. When you put it in writing it seems to come true!

Once signed, hang it in a place (at work or at home) where you'll see it every day. Use it as a strong motivational factor for committing yourself to better health and reaching your goals--and to help empower your team!

The Importance of Goal Setting
Goal
Experts agree that an excellent way to meet your nutrition, exercise, and weight loss targets is to set realistic goals. Our research and experience show that teams that discuss goal setting frequently tend to have the best success in Shape Up & Go!

Click here to download the Shape Up & Go! Goal Setting Guide.

For example, if you haven't exercised in a while, a three-mile run might not be practical; but walking at lunch with your team for 15 - 20 minutes is a very attainable goal. When you set realistic goals, you're more likely to stick with your fitness program. And when you think positively about your goals, you're more likely to reach them.

We encourage you to work with your team members to decide on healthy and achievable goals. You should then develop a customized plan for success. By working together and keeping an open dialogue, everyone can be successful in this competition. Choosing activities you enjoy will also help you maintain your daily physical activity. If you need a variety of activities to stay motivated, combine a few that appeal to you.
