www.DeepCreekRealty.com August 2008
Greetings! ,

We're a week away from Labor Day, the weather is lovely, and children are starting back to school.  This means two things -- many visitors will only be able to get here on weekends, and for the lucky folks who have more flexible scheduling, this might be the best time of year to enjoy our lake and water activities!

Speaking of water activities, I'd like to introduce you to one of our other great bodies of water, the Youghiogheny River.  Here in Garrett County, you'll find people who have special connections to the river, whether because we live along it (me!), paddle it (our agent Jeff Hovis is a river guide), fish it (friend Harold Harsh of Spring Creek Outfitters is a fly fishing guide), or visit it frequently (Swallow Falls is a favorite of visitors and locals alike).  My partner Scott Johnson provided the article below.

Please feel free to get in touch with me, or any of our professional Sales Associates, at any time!  I look forward to hearing from you.

"A River Runs Through It . . . "

The Youghiogheny Scenic and Wild River (pronounced yah-kuh-GAIN-ee) is part of the large Mississippi River watershed that stretches from the western slope of the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the Rockies in the west.

Native Americans named the river, which translates into our language as "a river that flows in a contrary direction", because as strange as it seems, the river flows from south to north. Beginning in the gently rolling farmlands of southern Garrett County, the Youghiogheny cuts a northward path through some of the most rugged mountain scenery in Maryland before running into Pennsylvania and merging with the Monongahela at McKeesport.

The Youghiogheny drains an area encompassing approximately 397 square miles in Maryland. In its first 20 miles, the river meanders through a pastoral setting of farms and wooded lots occasionally paralleled by country roads or railroad tracks. North of the town of Oakland, the character of the river changes as the river valley narrows, deepens, and becomes heavily forested. From Swallow Falls to Hoyes Run, the Youghiogheny enters a stretch of falls and rapids with a drop in elevation of 280 feet in four miles.

At Hoyes Run, a relatively smooth stretch of river can be found all the way to Gap Falls, just north of Sang Run. At that point, the most rugged and inaccessible section of the river runs wild and free to the town limits of Friendsville, dropping in elevation an average of over 100 feet per mile.

The "Yough" was established as Maryland's first Wild and Scenic River in 1976. The river offers excellent opportunities to catch trout and smallmouth bass. River otters, mink, and ospreys also call this river home.

As always, please get in touch if we can help! Our Agents can help identify properties that match what you're looking for, and can send you updates when new properties come on the market.  Please feel free to forward this message to a friend, and keep us in mind for all your real estate questions.  And if there's a topic you'd like to see addressed in this newsletter, please let  me know.
