STUDENT TO STUDENT LANGUAGE LAB
 
OneWorld Classrooms' online Student to Student Language Lab will launch on January 21, 2008 with modules in English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. (See your username/password reminder in the left hand column to access the Lab.) The Lab will feature K-12 students from around the world sharing their first languages via audio, video, photos and student artworkAs it grows through content contributions made by participating classes, it will become a great place for students to learn a foreign language straight from their peers who speak it!
 
The Student to Student Language Lab is an EXPLORE AND CONTRIBUTE resource. We welcome your class/school to contribute content NOW -- or any time before May, 2008. If you are interested, please send an E-mail to lab@oneworldclassrooms.org for additional information. ThinkQuest International 2008 (International)

The Oracle Education Foundation invites students and teachers to participate in ThinkQuest International 2008. Students and their teacher-coaches work in teams to build innovative and educational websites to share with the world. The top 5 teams in each age division receive laptop computers and a cash award for the coach's school. A special award is also presented to the team best demonstrating global perspectives.

How to connect this resource with OneWorld Classrooms: One of the primary objectives of ThinkQuest is to demonstrate global perspectives. To get these, make OneWorld Classrooms exchanges central to your final ThinkQuest project.


Lexus and Scholastic Environmental Challenge
(USA Only)

An education program and contest about the environment that empowers teens to create a better world.
4th Grade Amazon Rain Forest Class
Grants and scholarships of up to $75,000 will be awarded to teams of five to ten middle or high school students and one teacher-advisor working to address an environmental issue.

How to connect this resource with OneWorld Classrooms:
Work with overseas partner schools in various world regions through our Classroom Connections program to compare and contrast environmental issues and circumstances; and collaborate to generate solutions.


Longview Foundation (USA Only)

Now accepting letters of inquiry for initiatives in internationalizing teacher preparation and innovations in international education.

Deadline: January 8, 2008.

This prize program aims to raise awareness of the growing importance of international knowledge and skills for U.S. students and annually awards prizes totaling $150,000 in five different categories.
 
Deadline: December 3, 2007

How to connect this resource with OneWorld Classrooms: Criteria for this award include integrating international content across all subject subject areas and grade levels; learning world languages; forming partnerships with schools in other countries; and using technology to promote international learning. Participating in OneWorld Classrooms is a great way to demonstrate your efforts in all of these areas.
 
 
 
K-12 school districts and public and private schools providing character education will receive $10,000 to enhance their program and $10,000 to provide outreach to other educators.

How to connect this resource with OneWorld Classrooms: Fostering global citizenship is what OneWorld Classrooms is all about  -- and a key component of character education.

 
 
The NEA Foundation's Learning & Leadership Grants provide opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups engaged in collegial study.
 
The NEA Foundation's Student Achievement Grants provide $5,000 to improve the academic achievement of students by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve students' habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.

Free World AIDS Day Classroom Materials 

Journeys in Film is offering free curriculum materials to educate United States student populations about HIV/AIDS while exploring South African and Zulu culture through math, science, social studies, language arts, media literacy and visual arts lesson plans.

How to connect this resource with OneWorld Classrooms: Interact, through OWC's Classroom Connections, with a middle or high school AIDS Awareness Club in Namibia or South America to explore the topic from an international perspective.

 
 
Junior high and high school teachers can win a weeklong visit in July 2008 to Brazilian fair-trade cooperatives, farms, and communities for the purpose of creating fair trade lessons for the 2008-09 school year.
