Gospel for Holy Saturday

After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and removed his body.

Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews. Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic
A tomb is a place of certainty. You know more surely what you will find in a cemetery than in any other place.

Christians have proved very poor at believing our own propaganda regarding death. Too often our mourning is for every part of our loved one, and has no room for the lively hope of resurrection - the promise of eternal life. We obsess with the external details of physical death and lose sight of continuity. The picture to the left is of the Sedlec Ossuary - a chapel and tomb in The Czech Republic filled and decorated entirely with human bones. Why? To bully the living into obedience to the doctrine of The Church - as if death were some horrible punishment and not the fulfillment of life's journey. Let us be done with anointed old flesh and begin celebrating new life!

Almighty God, Bind into our hearts the lively hope of resurrection - help us to see past the cold sere fields of winter and glimpse the abundant pastures of spring. Amen.
