Greetings!

Earlier this month I went to Dragonfest in the ID. Wayne and I had a lot of fun on the food walk, sampling all kinds of delicacies the neighborhood has to offer. My favorites from the walk-to-it and eat it $2 tasting menu were the Egg Tarts at Dim Sum King, Sui Mai at Harbor City,  Garlic Chicken Wings from Phnom Pehn Noodle House and Shave Ice from the Hawaiian Street Vendor.

Kirkland Uncorked 2011Want to know who won the Grill-off at  Kirkland Uncorked a couple weeks ago? Pat Donahue, Executive Chef of Anthony's restaurants came out the winner, but it was a tough battle over the other contestants Jacob Nyman of Coho Cafe  and Wiley Frank of Lark and Shophouse Thai .  Pat's winning creation was a stunning plank salmon with a cherry sauce, fried prawn head garnish over a polenta base. I heard from the judges it was delicious! I was announcing the contest with Nancy Leson so we got to watch the judges eat!

Starting today I have an exciting new column and contributor to my newsletter. My friend Marlene will be sharing her recommendations for food writing and cookbooks.  She's and avid reader, former literature professor and educator and will give us some new summer reading recommendaitons. I just finished her copy of "School of Essentials Ingredients" and loved it!

I also want to thank everyone that contributed to the ACRS food bank's Walk for Rice this year. They were able to raise over $160,000. That's enough to purchase more than 265,000 pounds of rice, feeding over 100,000 individuals at 2.5 pounds per person! Way to go everyone! Let's walk again next year.

Fresh Chickpeas (Garbonzo Beans)!

Fresh garbanzo beans

Look what I found at the farmers market this week, Fresh Garbanzo Beans! This is garbanzo beans like you've never had them before. Open up those little pods and out falls one garbanzo bean, tender like an edamame bean.

You can eaFresh Garbanzo Beans2t them raw, with a little salt. It makes a nice snack or addition to a crudités plate. Or boil them in water, not too long, it only takes about 10 minutes to get them tender. (As opposed to an hour with dried garbanzos.) When I was buying my bagful, a wonderful Indian woman gave me her recipe to how she cooks her fresh chickpeas. OK and play with your food on this one as it was just off the top of her head and then mulled around in mine....

Fresh Chickpeas with Garam Masala and Tomatoes

1 tablesppon vegetable oil

1 small onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teasppon garam masala

1 bunch chickpeas (scant 2 cups)

1 large tomato cut in chunks

 garnish: cilantro

Heat oil in skillet over medium high heat. Add onion and cook to soften about 3-5 minutes. Add garic, cook for about 1/2 minute and then add chickpeas, garam masala and tomato. Add 1/2 cup water and cover to steam for about 5 minutes or just until peas are done to your liking. Garnish and serve.

Look for Alvarez Farms or Bautista Farm at the farmers markets to try some fresh garbanzo beans yourself!

The Gastronomy of Marriage

2009, Random House

by Michelle MaistoBook: Gastronomy of Marriage

The age-old question, "What's for dinner?" takes on new meaning when Michelle Maisto meets Rich and falls in love with him over a chocolate soufflé. She grew up in Southern California in an Italian-American family, Rich in a Chinese-American family in Virginia. Michelle is a vegetarian; Rich is a meat eater. Maisto's delightful memoir, records their courtship, their search for identity as a couple, the blending of two cultures, each with its own traditions and approaches to eating, and a shift from supermarket shopping to finding what's fresh and seasonal at the local green markets in Brooklyn. Recipes are included.

Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Dedication Ceremony

Time: Sat, Aug.6, 10-11:30am, Picnic from 11:30-5pm

Location: Bainbridge Island

Many of you know my Mom and Dad from class and my Mom's family lived on Bainbridge at the time of the evacuation, Dad's family were taken from their farm in the Sumner valley. Anyway these types of remembrances are really special to acknowledge our history and I think they are important reminders for us to be tolerant and compassionate. After all, when we all get around the table, our love of food, family and culture are much the same. It is truly why I have NuCulinary so that we can foster relationships across the table.

Bainbridge Island Memorial

Bainbridge Island

Exclusion Memorial

On March 30, 1942, two hundred twenty-seven men, women and children were forcibly removed from their Bainbridge Island homes, rounded up by US Army soldiers armed with rifles fixed with bayonets and boarded a ferry to Seattle, ultimately to be imprisoned in internment camps until the end of the war. The exclusion of these Japanese Americans was a clear violation of their constitutional rights, specifically those guaranteed under the fourth, fifth, sixth and fourteenth amendments.

Nidoto Nai Yoni, translated as "Let It Not Happen Again" is the motto and mission of the Nikkei Exclusion Memorial. Located on the site of the former Eagledale ferry dock on Bainbridge Island, Washington.  It commemorates and honors the strength and perseverance of the people involved - both those exiled and their island neighbors - and brings awareness of the powerful capacity of human beings and a nation to heal, forgive and care for one another.

Come join us for a celebration of the completion of the story-wall, including presentations by several guest speakers and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The BIJAC summer picnic follows at 11:30. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bento) results in a plethora of delicious dishes to share, so you'll find plenty beyond the treats you bring along. All are welcome. Come, bring your friends, and meet many new ones!
