Greetings!

I just got back from California for the Food and Culinary Professionals Passport to Flavor conference. I did a talk on the art of Japanese vegetable cookery. (Want a peek at my presentation? I've posted 3 Japanese vegetables you should eat at my NuCulinary facebook page.)

Uwajimaya BellevueBig news for Bellevue this week with the grand opening of a new Uwajimaya store! The Bel-Red/Crossroads location closed earlier this month and the new, beautiful, 50% larger store opened at 699 120th Ave NE (near the NE 8th street exits of Interstate 405).

If you've never been to a Uwajimaya store before, it features a full array of Asian groceries, produce, meat, seafood, gifts, and a deli with Asian hot and prepared foods, in addition to standard American groceries.

Are you curious, overwhelmed, or intimidated by Asian markets? Just the soy sauce aisle alone can be overwhelming with the 100's of different styles and brands. Well, I can teach you how to maneuver through the aisles with ease! Take my Uwajimaya store tour and you'll
  • Be guided to the good stuff! 5 essential Japanese foods to try.
  • Confidently purchase the exact items you need for perfect Asian dishes at home.
  • See first hand and ask questions about indispensable Asian kitchen tools.
  • Get plenty of personal attention or arrange a small group tour since I do these tours by appointment only.

Interested in a tour for yourself and a few friends? Email me and let's discuss! Or call 206-932-3855.

P.S. We moved out the dates on my Cooking Basics class at Bella Kitchen Essentials - So there's still time for you to get in on the whole series. (Or, just the one class or skill you want to focus on!)

Thank You!

I Love Japan Flag
Thank you everyone for your generous donations for earthquake and tsunami relief! As of today, the OregonJapanReliefFund has raised over $209,000! And I'm sure

SeattleJapanRelief

is seeing the same response.

I received so many thoughtful emails in the last week. I must say it is inspiring and sustaining to see what can be done when we all come together to help people half a world away.

Still want to help? Check out my calendar below, there are lots of fun fundraisers going on now!

Cherry Blossom Festival

Seattle Cherry Blossom Festival

Fri-Sun, April 1st-3rd

Location: Seattle Center

Learn the game GO, play with Japanese toys and participate in a tea ceremony demonstration, while you explore Seattle's deep connections with Japan and celebrate the beauty of spring. The event is a feast for the senses. Delicious food, Taiko drumming, Japanese artisan demonstrations, skate board routines and artwork present both a modern and ancient view of this complex culture.

Portland Cherry TreesPortland Sakura Sunday

Sunday, April 3, noon to 3:00pm

Location: At the Japanese American Historical Plaza

at NW Couch Street and Naito Parkway, Portland Oregon

Experience the centuries-old tradition of picnicking, blossom viewing and celebrating the fleeting splendor of spring. Portland's inaugural festival honors the friendship between the United States and Japan, symbolized by the cherry trees along the waterfront - a gift to the City of Portland from the Japanese Grain Importers Association in 1989. Featuring a performance by Portland Taiko. Special Japanese style bentos will be available to purchase at the event. This event will now focus on collecting donations for the Oregon Japan Relief Fund at Mercy Corps. More information at Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center

Ganbaro Japan!Ganbaro Japan!

Japanese restaurants in the Pacific Northwest are coming together to support relief and recovery efforts following the devastating earthquakes and tsunamis that struck the Tohoku region of Japan on March 11.

Because the process will be long, participating restaurants have agreed to hold multiple fundraisers to support what will no doubt be years of rebuilding. The project is called Ganbaro Japan! Their website let's you know when and where the fundraisers are happening. Check out what's on for this week!
