Greetings!
Special Engagement
The Globetrotting Gourmet previews culinary travel on Sunday, April 18 (by invitation only) and teaches Thai Red Curry Class on Tuesday, April 20.
Once in a while there are people that you meet and immediately know that they are rich wells of information on travel, food, culture and people. That is how I felt when I met Cookbook Author Robert Carmack, and Textile Designer Morrison Polkinghorne at the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) several years ago.
Since then, we have partnered to lead a group of culinary minded dietitians and nutritionists on a culinary tour to Singapore, the southern Thai island of Koh Samui and its capital city of Bangkok. The group continued on to Cambodia's wonder of the world Angkor Wat while Wayne and I traveled with friends north to Chiang Mai and Mai Sai. We had seen the ruins the year before with my sister.
The following year we were co-presenters at the IACP conference in Chicago this time on nutrition and cultural aspects of SE Asian Cuisine, I on the nutritional side of things and Robert and Morrison on the cultural. Working with them is always so expanding!
But, back to the trip. Robert and Morrie (we call him) met all my expectations and more. Their research prior to a trip is a multiple of return visits to the places and eateries and cooking classes that you will explore while you are traveling with them. They only take you to their favorite places where they have long made friendships and will provide you a look that a typical tour cannot do--we even met the Minister of Ayurvedic Health in Thailand to have a conversation about nutrition and herbal medicine. That is not on a tour itinerary anywhere!
When they are not authoring cookbooks (Robert has written at least 5); or shooting commercials; or writing for travel magazines; they are touring with others and for themselves. Although they are residents of Sydney, I swear they are always in SE Asia! But hey, you can read more for yourself here.
So, I want you to be able to explore the possibility for yourself. I always wanted to travel SE Asia but thought it was beyond my means and planning. I can tell you it is not. If you are a novice or veteran traveler, you can do this and it will be enjoyable and more than what you can do yourself.
It is richer, tastier and totally FUN. If there is a group of 10 of us going, then I may ditch our classes and go with you too!
Would you like to explore with me? Many of you have asked so that is why I am offering a way for you to meet Robert and Morrison prior to their class. This is only for you who want to explore culinary travel. I am limiting attendance as it is in a small space and my resources are limited to host you.
If you would like to meet them, see their presentation and just open the door for your own possibility, then register on our classes page and put a note in the comments of why your are interested. We will confirm you by Thursday April 15 and provide you with driving directions. The location will be either in Seattle, West Seattle or Mercer Island.
To the veteran traveler. Robert and Morrison will take you to the same places you can go on your own but you will see and experience it deeper and more fully with less stress than you can do on your own. If you want to see a country from a local/native point of view, I don't know of a better way otherwise I would tell you. Our veteran travelers were comfortable, delighted with their experience, and many have returned to travel with The Globetrotting Gourmet (TGTG) many times since.
To food writers, bloggers, and press:I would not steer your wrong from learning more about culinary travel and who you could use as a wonderful resource. You are welcome to this event but please register and note your credentials in our comments area. Thank you.
