PresidentCornerPresident's Corner - Henry Landes Henry Landes 2010

Mentors have been very important in my life, including my grandfather and my uncle.  I thought you would enjoy these brief thoughts on mentoring by Richard Rohr:

"Mentor was the name of the man that Odysseus placed in charge of his son, Telemachus, when he went off to fight the Trojan wars. The very fact that he saw such a need created the role and the name.

A mentor has a mature sense of himself or herself. A true mentor has inner authority that gives confidence to others. She or he possesses certain "magnanimity" of soul-a generosity of heart that makes others know they will not be abandoned. Basically, they must have the care and the capacity for simple friendship, not domination or merely supervision.

If a mentor is not free to talk about going "down" as well as going up they are not a true mentor. They must have the courage to tell you that you must be in the cellar for a while, and they will show you how you can stay there and not die!"

Best wishes as you mentor and are mentored on the journey of life!

PresidentCornerLearning Community Director - Sally DerstineSally, Cropped

As we near the end of 2010, I'd like to express deep gratitude for our Members, Clients, Partners and Associates for enriching our Family Business Learning Community in a multitude of ways, and for enhancing my own life as well. Whether it is through sharing your journeys, successes, and growth areas publicly at a Forum or reaching out to connect with and learn from another Member throughout the year, we are Community. A Community of individuals, families, and businesses that is learning together so we can each take that next step ... whether it's a baby step or a giant leap ... and the next step, which often takes some courage, some time, and getting out of our OWN way. But surrounded by a team, you are not alone. You are in good company.

Is there a topic you would like to learn more about or share with the Community? The next two Mini-Forums (on Marcellus Shale and Energy & Solar Solutions) grew out of Member suggestions. Mark your calendars for the November 11 Dinner Meeting at Lehigh University! What would you like to learn about? We want to hear from you!
