Beyond the Box

Our mission is to provide and assist in delivering humanitarian aid, shelter and sustainable water systems to people affected by natural and other disasters.

January/February 2011

Greetings!
Now that we are an organisation representing five different countries the decision has been made that we will share one international newsletter with information from all the partner countries involved.
You can read important news below about a recent announcement from the Disaster Relief Rotarian Action Group. If you would like to request a copy of the announcement please email DRRAG.
Also there is a link in one of the stories below to a newspaper article from Australian DART Dianne Holland who recently helped to deliver our aid in Sudan.

We thank all our supporters for their help. With your assistance we will do the best we can for as many as we can.
Sincerely,

Rotarian Action Groups
   DRRAG Logo
For several years Rotarian Action Groups have been growing slowly. They consist of groups of Rotarians across the world with an interest in a common cause. For example there is a Rotarian Action Group (RAG) for the advancement of Microcredit, one for Rotarians Fighting Aids, one for combatting malaria, and of course one involved in Disaster Relief (DRRAG). Click here for a complete listing of all the RAGs.
Rotary International invited the RAGs to host a display table for the very first time at the Rotary International Assembly, held recently in San Diego. Participants in this Assembly include all the incoming Rotary District Governors from across the globe.
At the Assembly, the President of DRRAG, Past Rotary International Director John Eberhard, was pleased to release an important announcement about a Memorandum of Understanding which has been signed between DRRAG and Disaster Aid International, whereby DAI will become the implementing organisation for
DRRAG.
For more information about DRRAG visit their website at www.DRRAG.org.   Rotarians who wish to become members of DRRAG can obtain more information about membership fees by emailing anne@disasteraidinternational.com. One year and five year memberships are available.
Sudan
Sudanese Children Claim their PackJust before Christmas 2010 a team from DAI delivered Family Survival Packs to Sudanese returning to their ancestral homelands to vote in the January referendum. In almost all cases they came back to absolutely nothing. For a first hand account from DART Dianne Holland go to DART Diary on Sudan. To view more pictures from Sudan go to our Photo Gallery.
For a comprehensive summary of the situation in Sudan go to an article from Larry Garber -   Deputy Assistant Administrator for Africa for USAID. Let us hope his confidence in the peaceful outcome comes to fruition.

We endeavour to provide a photograph and geographic coordinates of recipient families to every donor of a complete Family Survival Pack, temporary school, First Aid Station or SkyJuice. Coming soon - our long awaited Solar Power System.

 USA

Two American Rotary Clubs have adopted DAUSA as their project, Sulphur Sunrise in Louisiana and Bladensburg in Maryland. Ambassador Larry Agee has been visiting clubs in Louisiana and PDG Bob Grill and his team have been active in the north east. Several Rotary District Governors have requested presentations at their District Conferences and PETS. The one at the District 6190 conference in Munroe,LA was very well received. We look forward to greeting more supporters at the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans in May.

 UK & Ireland

Things are rolling in UK. January has seen presentations to RC Clubs in District 1050. (Lifebox's home district.) 6 ambassadors and 6 prospective DART members have been recruited so far. Plans are drawn to rollout Disaster Aid throughout the UK & Ireland in coming months, with a huge boost expected at the RIBI Conference in Dublin (April 15th - 17th ) where DAUKI  will be exhibiting the tent and equipment. Rotarians in the UK are very motivated to support Disaster Aid, understanding that it is 100% Rotary.
