September 2010
Historic Day for Disaster Aid |
| Greetings!
Below are details of our first deployment to assist the victims of flooding in Pakistan. It is your support that has enabled us to launch this initiative just three short months since the inception of Disaster Aid Canada. Just a quick reminder that the last day for the Canadian government's matching grant program for Pakistan is September 12th.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Don Ohlgren CAGP

Thanks to the intrepid efforts of our Disaster Aid Response Team the first Family Survival Kits have been delivered in Pakistan. The international team consists of Larry (USA), Reggie (USA), Hal (CAN) and Peter (AUS).
They are delivering aid to villagers in Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa. This is the first aid the victims have seen in the months since the catastrophic flooding that destroyed their homes. Now that the water has receded the tents have been erected on the site of the village rather than in a camp so that the people can re-establish themselves in their former location. Several still have farm animals and so on that they need to be close to.
A Pakistani official assisting with the deployment remarked that ours were a big improvement on tents he has seen before, and he has taken part in several disaster relief operations previously.
Two more containers are on the way to Pakistan, bringing our commitment to them to 700 boxes. Congratulations to the partner countries of Disaster Aid International -Canada, Australia and USA - for organising and delivering this difficult deployment in just three short months since the formation of the Disaster Aid organisation. For a gallery of photos from Pakistan visit the Deployments page of www.disasteraid.ca.
Here is Larry with the first recipient of our new equipment. With the help of a translator he told Larry he had to wade through water up to his neck carrying his children in order to save them from the floods. He also said this Family Survival Kit will help to change their lives for the better.
A family enjoying the shade of their new shelter.

Do You Have What it Takes?.
We are accepting applications for our evaluation and training camps to be held in Victoria BC for those wanting to assist us in the delivery of aid. Interviews and training courses for Canadian Disaster Aid Response Team Members are scheduled to begin later in the Fall in Canada. Our DART's are volunteers who take time out of their lives to help deliver our aid to stricken areas. It is important that aid get to the intended recipients and that they be shown how to pitch and take care of their tents and other equipment. If you are interested or would lilke more details email don@disasteraid.ca.
