"Reiki works great with cats.
They enjoy the energy and respond to it very well." says Maureen Purcell, Reiki Master Teacher and Shiatsu Practitioner.

"I have over 9 years of experience in healing and bodywork.  I am a Reiki Master Teacher and I am a graduate of The International School of Shiatsu. I have over 600 hours of training in Shiatsu and eastern health.  Animals are very comfortable in my presence." she continued.

"I personally adopted a "lost" golden retriever, Molly.  She was told to me to be about 11 years old by the vet when I adopter her.  She had a tumor mass on her right abdomon and I kept her very content and happy for 3 years until her age finally caught up to her.  I provided Reiki and Shiatsu to her on a regular basis.  She was a great addition to my life and brought me much joy."

Greetings!
I have seen articles recently about "Senior Dogs".  I am relating to this subject (Me and the Dog), and I thought I would share a few.
Holly will be 12 this year and we call her the puppy.  She still has the bright eyes, gorgeous coat and big appetite.  But now I see the little things that are happening.  She has always been a snoozer, but now she sleeps a little harder and doesn't always hear the UPS truck in the driveway.  Running up the stairs, she misses a few now and then.  We even had to put steps to our new bed; just a little too high for the old girl.
She is excercised, fed the best food, gets groomed on a regular basis and has her check-ups with the vet. But yet, we understand, they do not live forever.  Too bad dogs can't outlive their masters.

Dr. Jon Tips

What do dog owners do that make them good owners and help give them healthy happy dogs? I was thinking about this the other day - and there are several things that dog owners can do. Here are 5 very good dog owner habits.

1.  First, good dog owners walk and exercise their dogs. Most dogs love to run and play. It is both a physical and mental release and helps keep them physically strong and emotionally happy.

2.  Yearly check-ups. Ensuring that your dog has yearly check-ups to help identify any medical problems before they become problems is a very good habit. During the yearly exam, your veterinarian will also determine if your dog requires any vaccines, flea control or heartworm preventative medications.  These measures will help to keep your dog healthy and comfortable.

3.  Good daily care. Daily monitoring of your dogs appetite, urinations, bowel movements are a part of be a good responsible dog owner. Healthy dogs have a good appetite, normal urinations, healthy bowel movements and maintain an ideal weight. Any abnormalities should be noted and any persistent changes should be reported to your veterinarian.

4.  Feed a good quality food . Good nutrition is one way a dog owner can proactively make a difference in their dog's health. Over the past two decades, there has been a lot of research and scientific information used to properly formulate dog's foods to optimize health.

5.  Daily grooming . Monitoring your dogs nails and trim them when needed, brush his teeth at least ever other day and daily brush his hair are important ways to prevent unnecessary problems such as dental disease, torn nails, matting, and needless shedding around your home.

I hope these tips help keep your dog happy and healthy.
Until next time,

Dr. Jon

P.S. Also, another important thing to do to keep your dog healthy is to make sure your dog is identified with a good collar and ID tag! This will help get him back to you if he is ever lost.

SHORT NOTICE AND EMERGENCIES OUR SPECIALTY

seniorPreparing early for common senior dog health problems will help alleviate any anxiety as symptoms of old age appear in your dog. These symptoms can range from common yet benign health issues to serious issues, such as tumors.

Joint and Bone Health Problems
As a dog ages, his bones become less dense and he can develop joint problems. He may develop arthritis, which can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed by a veterinarian. Since arthritis can slow a dog down, more time and energy may be required in performing activities, so greater patience is required.

Reduction in Metabolism
Since a dog's metabolism slows down with age, it is important to maintain proper caloric intake. Your dog will need fewer calories but more nutritious foods to maintain proper health. Low protein intake helps lower the workload for the kidneys while the lower fat intake lowers calories. The higher fiber will aid in less constipation. Liver and kidney dysfunction are common as a dog ages. This diet will also aid in maintaining a healthy coat and skin which becomes thin and less pliable. Eating dry dog food will help to control tartar build-up and reduce gum disease, which is another common senior dog health problem.

Eyes and Ears
Cataracts can develop which need to be treated quickly before any vision impairment occurs. Hearing loss also occurs and can lead to your dog being startled since he cannot hear you approaching. Hand signals can be used to communicate.

It is important to observe your dog's actions and behavior. Any change can signal a serious condition.
