Greetings!

Planning vacations can be fun or can be very stressful.  So many details, including budget, kids, other family members and our prized pets.  Some years we travel when we can take Holly with us in the car and she always enjoys that.  We have even gone on extended trips and had our dogs fly with us.  Rent a station wagon on the other end and find Pet Friendly hotels and campgrounds.

When your vacation does not include Fluffy or Rover, what to do?  There are some great kennels with caring owners, pet camps with lots of other dogs (no cats), friends and relatives, or pet sitters.

Obviously my goal is to convince you that pet sitting is not only comfortable to your pets, but may be an economical choice.

Kennels - The day before you leave on your vacation you have to drive Fluffy and Rover to the kennel.  Bring their toys and beds (if they let you, food, medications).  When you get back from vacation the kennel is closed and you have to wait until the next day to get Fluffy and Rover.  That add two Extra nights to the Kennel Bill.  With a Pet Sitter, you only pay for the visits while you are gone.

Pet Camps - Same as above, but does Rover get along well with others?  Does he share?  Are you going to get a call in the middle of your vacation saying "Rover can't Play with Other's, he is being sent to solitary confinement", which means another charge.  If you are lucky, he hasn't caused any damage to other animals or picked-up any critters to deal with at home later.

Friends - I have to admit, I have the best friends.  They love Holly coming to "Doggy Camp" at their house.  There is no charge and they spoil her.  (Maybe a few pounds put on eating the Frosty Paws).  This "Doggy Camp" usually costs me about $50.00 in trinkets picked-up during the vacation - T-Shirts, LIquor, Food, etc.

Relatives - Now this may be the biggest expense of all. Having the meddling mother-in-law picking up your mail and going through your closets, or the neice that brings in her friends to your house for a party her parents don't know about.  You are asking friends and relatives to come out in bad weather to take care of your cats, dogs, fish, hamsters, turtles, plants.........

So go plan that great vacation and leave the worries, fun and caring to us.

Soothing Melodies - from PetCentric
As humans, we embrace music not just for the artistry or sound, but for the way it can make us feel. We can energize ourselves with rock, inspire ourselves with classical, or connect to the rest of humanity through songs of love or heartbreak. Scientists have found that our pets can be affected by music as well.
Animal behaviorist, Hermann Bubna-Littitz, a professor at the Veterinary University of Vienna studied the effects of soothing music on house cats and found that it put them in a state of relaxation and even curbed aggressive behavior. In fact, when the music was played, the cats were drawn toward the speakers. This inspired him to have music composed specifically for cats.

Dr. Deborah Wells, of the Canine Behavior Centre at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland conducted a study of the effects of music on dogs in animal shelters. The study found that the type of music dogs heard had a dramatic affect on their disposition. Heavy metal music caused quite a bit of barking, while pop music had about the same effect as human conversation. But when dogs were exposed to classical music, they were far more relaxed, and quiet.
Since the study was released, animal shelters in the UK have played classical music to soothe their dogs. While this makes dogs more relaxed at the shelter, it has another added benefit, though it hasn't been scientifically documented. When people looking to adopt pets enter a shelter, classical music also relaxes them, and seems to cause them to spend more time looking around. And, when dogs appear calm and relaxed, rather than nervous and anxious, they are more appealing, thus more adoptable. Perhaps music can save lives?

Dogs have also been known to be quite the music critics. If you love the music of composer Richard Wagner, you have a dog to thank for it. Of course, Wagner was a musical genius, but maybe one of the smarter things he did was to trust in the taste of his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Peps. Wagner had a little stool made for Peps, so he could sit by him at the piano. Wagner watched how Peps reacted to the music he was creating. He noted which keys made Pep's tail wag and which made him stand up. This led Wagner to create the "musical motif" which associates specific musical keys with the moods he wanted to express in his operas. When Peps passed away, Wagner had to get a new dog critic to help him continue composing.
Our petcentric readers have noticed their pets having a specific taste in music. Kathryn has two hyperactive Jack Russell/Sheltie mixes that are particularly drawn to the theme from Titanic, dog ipod"My Heart Will Go On" and Diana Ross' "Theme from Mahogany". She says, "Henley--the Celine fan, perks his ears up... sometimes lays on his side and closes his eyes.  When Celine hums the last part of the song, he goes wild, and rolls around on the floor in happiness."

There are plenty of CDs available to play for your pets - here are just a few for dogs and cats. Some are collections of classical music that seem to particularly appeal to pets, and some are specifically composed for pets. Like humans, pets have their own tastes - some will love the music, others will ignore it. But for pets that seem to be truly calmed by a soothing melody, it's a nice thing to leave playing when they're home alone, or in a stressful situation.

What do dog owners do that make them good owners and help give them healthy happy dogs? I was thinking about this the other day - and there are several things that dog owners can do. Here are 5 very good dog owner habits.

1.  First, good dog owners walk and exercise their dogs. Most dogs love to run and play. It is both a physical and mental release and helps keep them physically strong and emotionally happy.

2.  Yearly check-ups. Ensuring that your dog has yearly check-ups to help identify any medical problems before they become problems is a very good habit. During the yearly exam, your veterinarian will also determine if your dog requires any vaccines, flea control or heartworm preventative medications.  These measures will help to keep your dog healthy and comfortable.

3.  Good daily care. Daily monitoring of your dogs appetite, urinations, bowel movements are a part of be a good responsible dog owner. Healthy dogs have a good appetite, normal urinations, healthy bowel movements and maintain an ideal weight. Any abnormalities should be noted and any persistent changes should be reported to your veterinarian.

4.  Feed a good quality food . Good nutrition is one way a dog owner can proactively make a difference in their dog's health. Over the past two decades, there has been a lot of research and scientific information used to properly formulate dog's foods to optimize health.  Iams recently came out with a food called IamsŪ Premium Protection™. According to Iams, this enhanced formula helps burn fat, develop muscle and promote healthy digestion. It was developed by nutritionists and veterinarians, so these complete, all-in-one diets have the right balance of proteins, fats and fibers to help protect your dog's health.

Take advantage of that knowledge by feeding a premium dog food.

5.  Daily grooming . Monitoring your dogs nails and trim them when needed, brush his teeth at least ever other day and daily brush his hair are important ways to prevent unnecessary problems such as dental disease, torn nails, matting, and needless shedding around your home.

I hope these tips help keep your dog happy and healthy.
Until next time,

Dr. Jon
