Greetings!
This is the time of year we usually think about our vacations. Unfortunately, the economy is such, most are thinking about what can they do close to home. We are fortunate to live in an area that has an abundance of great day or overnight trips. Philadelphia, New York, Washington DC, Boston, The Jersey Shore, the Pocono Mountains - just to name a few.
We should not give up the pleasure of 'getting away'. This is a constitutional right (isn't it?). We need it, we crave it! Getting through the work week just is not worth it if we cannot have the pleasure of getting away.
There are plenty of Dog Friendly travel places too. But when fido or kitty cannot travel, we are there. Their stress does not come from work, but from strange surroundings. Leaving them in their own home and beds is just one less thing to think about. Heck with the Economy - Rover is happy!
Anyway, I would like to thank two wonderful contributors for the Reliable Pet Sitter email each Month. Dr. Karen Detweiler has written some serious and funny articles each month. Be sure to check out the Website of Mobi-Vet. Karen is a wonderful and caring professional that you will come to love.
So many of the great photos on our site and our newsletters are from Jane Caruso at Contemporary Concepts Photo www.contempphoto.com. Jane has a new website and it is really awesome. Also she has her schedule for the photo sessions you will not want to miss.
Drink a tall one for me on St. Patty's Day,

FAT PETS
|
Dr. Susan Detweiler - Mobi-Vets
With the
coming of spring and longer days we should all resolve to take our dogs for nice
long walks! One of the best things a pet owner can do for
their dog or cat is to help them lose weight if they are chubby or obese. Every year veterinarians deal with many
health problems due primarily to the poor dog or cat having to lug around twice
their normal body weight. Just as extra
weight is hard on our joints and heart, fat dogs and cats also suffer with
medical side effects. Diabetes,
hypothyroidism, blown knees, fatigue and other problems can be prevented simply
by cutting back on your pets food and increasing exercise, just like us! Sometimes your vet maybe embarrassed to
discuss the pets obesity if the owner, or the vet, is also overweight. Don't be afraid to ask for advice about your
pet's body condition the next time you take Fluffy to the vet.
There is
nothing sadder than to see a healthy young dog lugging around so much extra
weight that it can barely move. And even
worse is that the dog doesn't overfeed itself, it has an accomplice! It's owner gives it too much food and not
enough exercise. The pet doesn't fill
the food bowl. Granted, those big brown
eyes pleading for more food can be hard to resist, especially if it is
accompanied by a high pitched whine. Be
strong! Resist the whine and harden your
heart. If dieting isn't helping, you may want
to have your pet examined because it might be a thyroid problem making it
difficult to lose the weight. A simple blood test will be able to diagnose such
a problem.
Besides using a
low calorie pet food, there are lots of other ways to decrease calories in and
increasing calories out. Instead of
fatty high calorie treats try frozen string beans or air popped popcorn. Feed twice daily rather than once a day and
go for walks. If your pet is too heavy
to pick up and weigh with the bathroom scale, you can measure the distance
around the chest with a measuring tape and keep track of those inches. Keep a journal of what your pet is eating,
how much exercise is happening and what the weight or chest measurements
are. Watching progress happen is
rewarding. You want your beloved pet to
live a long and happy life? Then keep
your pet in great shape. All those long
walks will help you too! See your
veterinarian to help get your pet started on the road to good health. Over
feeding your pet can literally kill them with kindness. |

Is Cocoa Mulch a Danger?
|
|
| I have been getting emails for the past couple of weeks about Cocoa Mulch. I tried to check with a couple of sources. Snope says: Part of this is true. I am not willing to take a chance. If you have not heard about the Cocoa Mulch discussion - do a google search. Bottom line - Chocolate is not good for pets! |
