Where food, fitness, and fun are a way of life!
Greetings!

September is "Fruit & Veggies - More Matters" month, so programs across the country are aimed at increasing our average fruit & veggie intake. This is great. However, loading up on produce without making other adjustments can spike your grocery bill. This is not great.

Choosing fruits & vegetables that are in season is one great way to stretch food dollars, and this handy calculator will estimate a reasonable amount to spend on food for a family like yours. Find out how my family measures up below!
A Half-truth is the Most Cowardly of Lies

After walking by several times in disgust, I finally took a picture of an awful marketing poster at LA Fitness. Based on the latest prices, the USDA low-cost food plan indicates that my family can achieve a nutritious diet by spending an estimated $149.19 per week or $646.44 per month. Yikes!

The bad news is that there is no way we can spend that much on groceries each month. The good news is that we eat tons of fresh produce every single day, and our grocery bill is nearly half this amount, so it is possible to eat well for less.

We eat most of our meals at home, cook many things from scratch, regularly shop at the farmer's market, and plan out our weekly menus. I'm convinced that these habits help keep our food bill in check without sacrificing nutrition.
