Common Myths As '09 comes to a close, many of us are focused on how to achieve a healthy and happy weight, but unfortunately we are barraged with endless weight loss myths - especially during the holiday season. Try your best to remain dedicated only to options that are physically and emotionally healthy and sustainable, and avoid feeling trapped by these common myths:

  • Myth: Fad diets work for permanent weight loss. Fad diets are not the best way to lose weight and keep it off. You may lose weight at first, but diets that strictly limit calories or food choices are hard to follow. Most people quickly get tired of them and regain any lost weight.

  • Myth: Starches are fattening and should be limited when trying to lose weight. Many foods high in starch, like whole wheat bread, rice, pasta, cereals, beans, fruits, and some vegetables are low in fat and calories. They become high in fat and calories when eaten in large portion sizes or when covered with high-fat toppings like butter, sour cream, or mayonnaise.

  • Myth: Certain foods, like grapefruit, celery, or cabbage soup, can burn fat and make you lose weight. No foods can burn fat. Some foods with caffeine may speed up your metabolism for a short time, but they do not cause weight loss.

  • Myth: Eating after 8 p.m. causes weight gain. It does not matter what time of day you eat. It is what and how much you eat and how much physical activity you do during the whole day that determines whether you gain, lose, or maintain your weight. No matter when you eat, your body will store extra calories as fat.

Healthy Eggnog Recipe This is a really yummy and healthy version of a holiday favorite that is normally very fattening:

  • 1 quart skim milk
  • 1 cup thawed fat free frozen egg substitute *
  • 1/2 cup fat free instant vanilla pudding powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon rum extract
  • Freshly grated nutmeg

  • Combine the milk, egg substitute, pudding, sugar, vanilla, and rum in a blender. Process until smooth. Chill for at least 3 hours. Stir or shake well before serving. Sprinkle the nutmeg on each serving.

    Makes 8 servings.

    Preparation Time: 5 minutes
    Chilling Time: 3 hours
Total Time: 3 hours, 5 minutes

*Make sure to use a frozen egg substitute rather than a powdered or other substitute as the results will not be the same. This eggnog is made using pasteurized eggs, so has the added advantage of being safe for the elderly, children, or those with compromised immunity with no danger of salmonella poisoning from raw eggs.

This eggnog stores well for up to 8 hours, but after that it starts to lose some of the thickness and body that makes for a great eggnog.
