August 2008

Greetings!
Yoda (Star Wars) said it best when he delivered this poignant line:
Do or do not. There is no try.
We're quickly approaching the end of the summer. School will be back in session, vacations are winding down, and the holiday season (when weight gain is typically at its highest) will be upon us in no time.
2008 is over halfway through, and many of us are still stuck "trying" to work out more often and "trying" to eat right, to no avail.
Instead of just trying, take this last summer month to actually DO something. Pick a single healthy living habit, and do all that you can to make it happen.
Do you want to learn how to eat better without sacrificing great taste? Be sure to join us for "Adopting the Mediterranean Diet," an exciting nutrition event (read more below) on August 26th!

FREE Event: "Adopting the Mediterranean Diet"
Please join us!
Join us on Wednesday, August 27th at 6:30pm
at lululemon athletica's Morningside Showroom in Virginia Highlands (1409 Suite F, North Highland Ave., Atlanta, GA
30306) for a Café
Physique event entitled "Adopting the
Mediterranean Diet." If you're looking for a heart-healthy eating
plan, the Mediterranean diet might be right for you. The Mediterranean diet
incorporates the basics of healthy eating among other components characterizing
the traditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea,
particularly Southern Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Turkey and Spain.
Gaining popularity in the medical community because of its amazing health
benefits, Mediterranean-style cooking also tastes great and is easy to prepare.
Join Café Physique's Nutrition &
Wellness Coach, Kathianne
Williams, MEd, RD, LD for an overview of the eating plan, its health
benefits, and how it compares to the current US
government food pyramid. Afterwards, stick around for some delicious
Mediterranean fare while mingling with other like-minded members of the
Lululemon community.

Biggest Exercise Myth:
Crunches Are the Key to Flat Abs
Despite the headlines in popular magazines that offer empty promises of "Flat Abs in 10 Days," thinking that you can create toned and defined abs with a series of endless crunches is one of the biggest exercise myths.
The truth of the matter is that developing six-pack abs is extremely difficult, and your best shot is to lose body fat through: 1. Regular cardio exercise
2. Strength Training for the ENTIRE BODY (not just the abs)
3. A healthy, low-calorie diet
If you're one of the many who have lost body fat and still
don't have the abs of your dreams, you can probably blame it on genes because many of us just aren't built to develop super toned abdominals - even with a near perfect exercise program and diet.
This certainly doesn't mean that you should give up - just make sure that your goals are realistic and attainable.

Weekend Noshing
Prevent Weight Gain on Your Days Off
Kicking back and being less vigilant about what you eat and drink even
just two days out of the week can add up to an almost nine-pound weight
gain over the course of a year. If you think your weekend might be sabotaging your diet efforts, here's what you can do:
- Weigh yourself twice a week-either Friday and Monday a.m. or
Thursday and Monday a.m. There's nothing better to keep you on track
than knowing that you have to face the scale come Monday morning.
- Try to stick with the same meal patterns you follow midweek on the weekend.

- "Bank" calories: If you know you are going out for dinner and will
overeat, cut back even more the day before and after to compensate.
- Limit your alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a diet double-whammy;
it's not only rich in calories itself, but it also reduces inhibitions
and increases appetite.
- Don't give in to your raging appetite after exercising;
it'll erase the calorie burn (and then some) of your workout. Instead,
fill up with lean protein and whole grains.
- Pack fruit and healthy snacks or lunches if you're going to be out
of the house all day, so you don't have to rely on food-court and
concession-stand choices.
- If you need to cheat on the weekend, plan what and when you're
going to cheat, enjoy it, then get back on track. One indiscretion
won't set you back-but a weekend of multiple indulgences will.
