Where Food, Fitness and Fun Are a Way of Life
June 2008
Greetings!

AmberResearchers say that it takes 21 days to build a habit.  In this amount of time, an activity that started as a challenge can become a normal part of a person's life.

Based on this, if you start exhibiting a new healthy behavior today, it can become a habit by July 1st.

While you may have an entire list of new habits that you'd like to build (work out more, eat healthier food, get an extra hour of sleep, drink 8 glasses of water, etc.), try not to change too many variables at once.  Focus on just one for the next 21 days.

During this period, it will become easier to set aside time and you'll begin to accrue motivation to want to perform the task without the feeling of forcing yourself.

Remember, you have to perform the action or activity every single day though - no slacking off.  In this case, a change in thought will come after a change in action.  You will, indeed, have to force the action at first, but your mind will catch up in just a few weeks.  Get going...

Working Out in Extreme Heat
Outdoor Workout Tips

Summer is officially here, and along with it comes longer days and more opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and workouts.  Be sure to take the proper precautions to avoid heat-induced injury and illness.

These tips can help keep your outdoor workouts safe:
  • Hot SunDrink plenty of fluids. It's extremely important to stay hydrated. If you're thirsty then you are already dehydrated; drink before you feel a need to. Be sure to drink throughout the day (stick to non-caffeinated beverages, preferably water). Also, drink 15-20 minutes before beginning your workout and every 15 minutes throughout the exercise.
  • Eat regularly. The heat can decrease your appetite, but it's important to eat normally. Try to eat small meals 5-6 times per day. Include lots of fruits and vegetables. Aside from being nutritious, fruits also tend to help with hydration.
  • Wear light, loose fitting clothes that can breath. Cotton is always a good choice. If your outdoor activity produces a lot of perspiration, consider clothing that is designed to wick the sweat away.
  • Wear sunscreen. Even if you exercise early in the morning or late in the evening, if the sun can reach you then you can get burned. Not only is a sunburn bad on the skin and potentially dangerous but it also hinders your bodies ability to stay cool.
  • Use common sense and don't attempt strenuous activities that your body is not accustom to. Stick to exercises that you are very familiar and comfortable with.
  • Check the weather forecast. It's best not to participate in intense outdoor exercise sessions when the heat index registers in the dangerous zone.
  • Avoid outdoor physical activity during the hottest part of the day, which usually is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Go Easy On the Salt
Tips for Reducing the Amount of Sodium in Your Diet

You probably know that you should cut back on salt, but do you know why? Maintaining a healthy level of sodium intake helps prevent or lower high blood pressure.  If you already have high blood pressure lowering it can reduce your chances of heart disease and stroke.

Most of the sodium in our diet comes from processed foods. The rest comes from the salt we shake on our food at the table and salt added while cooking.  GOAL: Limit the amount of sodium that you consume from all these sources to no more than 2,400 milligrams (mg) each day which is equal to only about 1 teaspoon of salt.Salt Shaker

In addition to reading food labels to find out how much salt is in the foods you eat, buy foods with these claims more often:
  • Sodium Free
  • Very Low Sodium
  • Low Sodium
  • Reduced (or less) Sodium
  • Light in Sodium
  • Unsalted
And choose these foods less often:
  • Smoked or cured meats like bacon, bologna, hot dogs, ham, corned beef, luncheon meats, and sausage
  • Most cheese spreads and some cheeses
  • Salty chips, nuts or pretzels
  • Some cold (ready to eat) cereals highest in sodium, instant hot cereals
  • Quick cooking rice and instant noodles, boxed mixes like rice, scalloped potatoes, macaroni and cheese, some frozen dinners, pot pies and pizza
  • Regular canned vegetables
  • Pickled foods like herring, pickles, relish, olives, or sauerkraut
  • Regular canned soups, instant soups
  • Butter
  • Soy sauce, steak sauce, salad dressing, ketchup, barbecue sauce, garlic salt, onion salt, seasoned salts like lemon pepper.
Reducing salt doesn't mean that your food has to be bland - it just requires more creativity.  Try using spices, herbs, and flavorings like oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt free seasoning blends (i.e. Mrs. Dash).

And here's something you might not know...As you begin to decrease your salt intake, your taste buds will become more accustomed to enjoying food with less salt.  Your tastes will adapt to fit your new behavior, so step out on faith and you'll soon find that you actually prefer food that is less salty.
