May 2008
|
Greetings!
In addition to being the month that we celebrate Mother's Day, May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month. This is a time to reinforce what we already know about working out and to learn new methods for developing and sticking with an effective physical fitness program.
Adults 18 and older need 30 minutes of physical activity on five or
more days a week to be healthy and 60 minutes to promote weight loss.
Time starved? You'll be happy to know that thirty to sixty minutes of activity broken into smaller segments of 10
or 15 minutes throughout the day still has significant health benefits.
"All parts of the body which have a
function, if used in moderation and exercised in labours in which each
is accustomed, become thereby healthy, well-developed and age more
slowly, but if unused and left idle they become liable to disease,
defective in growth, and age quickly." - Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine Healthy Living,
Amber O'Neal Owner/Head Trainer

Fit Tip of the Month
Create the Perfect Workout
There are three major components that should be included in
any comprehensive workout plan:
- Cardiovascular activity
is any exercise that moves your whole body or uses large muscle groups to challenge the heart by increasing your breathing and heart rates. Examples
include walking, running, riding a bike, aerobics classes and using cardio
equipment like a treadmill or elliptical.
- Strength training
involves working muscle groups against the resistance of weights or
gravity. A greater amount of muscle mass, even at rest, consumes more calories than fat.
By increasing your muscle mass you in effect increase your body's capacity to burn calories.
- Improving flexibility
allows you to move joints and use muscles through their full range of
motion. Stretching is an activity that you can do on a regular basis, but
as with any activity, improper stretching can cause or aggravate an injury.

Dietary Supplements
Choose Wisely
Dietary supplements include vitamins and minerals, as well as herbs, botanicals and other substances, and they are growing in popularity and number, but how do you know if you need them or which ones do what?
Some supplements may help ensure that you get adequate amounts of
essential nutrients or help promote optimal health and performance if
you do not consume a variety of foods.
However, dietary supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose,
mitigate, prevent, or cure disease. In some cases, dietary supplements
may have unwanted effects, especially if taken before surgery or with
other dietary supplements or medicines, or if you have certain health
conditions.
Before you decide to add supplements to your routine, get the facts
on what is known about them. Ask a registered dietitian and your physician the following questions about any supplements you are
thinking about taking:
- Is the supplement safe and can it cause harm at any level?
- How does the supplement really work in the body?
- What are the claims and are they valid?
- Where did the product information come from?
- Does the supplement actually contain the amounts of ingredients it claims to?
- What is the scientific evidence behind the product?
- How much is recommended and how often should it be taken?
- Will this supplement interact with my medications?
Always keep in mind that good nutrition depends on overall healthful eating and physical activity...There is no little magic pill. Find Out More About Our Nutrition Services

Donate Fitness Equipment Help Us Serve Domestic Violence Survivors
Domestic Violence Can Happen to Anyone... - 31% of American women report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.
- Women of all races are about equally vulnerable to violence by an intimate partner.
- Each year, about 324,000 pregnant women in the U.S. are battered by the men in their lives.
- Approximately one in five female high school students reports being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.
- Children who witness domestic violence are more likely to exhibit behavioral and physical
health problems.
This summer, Cafe Physique will begin teaching weekly fitness classes at a group living facility offering a safe place for women and children who have suffered domestic violence.
Here's How You Can Help:
- Donate new/used fitness equipment (resistance bands, small dumbbells, exercise mats, aerobic steps and exercise balls).
