Where Food, Fitness and Fun Are a Way of Life

January 2008

Greetings!
Over 66 percent of American adults are considered overweight or obese, so it is not surprising to find that getting fit is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions.
The key to staying on track with your healthy living resolutions is consistency, and here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Choose an activity you enjoy that fits your lifestyle.
- Set realistic goals, and tailor your program to your own fitness level.
- Give your body a chance to adjust to your new routine.
- Stay positive even though you may not see immediate results.
- Don't give up if you miss a day; just get back on track the next day.
- Find
a partner for a little motivation and socialization.
- Build some rest days into your exercise schedule.
Exercise your way to fitness, and make healthy eating part of your daily life in 2008.

Fit Tip of the Month
Spend Wisely When Purchasing Exercise Equipment
Feeling good, looking fit, and leading a long and healthy life are things most
of us want, so oftentimes people are easily scammed as they attempt to buy fancy fitness equipment to help them reach their goals. - If you are considering buying a device that "guarantees" weight loss with little or no effort, check with the Federal Trade Commission to see if it's really effective and safe.
- Purchase an extended service plan. It's usually less expensive than just one repair without it.
- Before purchasing used equipment, check with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to make sure the item has not been recalled.
- If you work in an office building or live in an apartment complex, check to see if there is a workout room on the premises. You may be able to use their equipment for free or at a significant discount.
Before investing in expensive equipment, consider your needs carefully and consult with a fitness expert who may be able to make cost-saving recommendations. Inexpensive Home Exercise Equipment

Cut 50 Calories a Day
An extra 50 calories per day may not seem like much, but consider this:
If you cut just 50 calories a day from your diet, you'll be five pounds
lighter by the end of 2008! Are you wondering how to make this happen? Each of these tips will save you 50 calories:
- Choose fruit instead of juice: A medium orange has 60 calories,
while a cup of orange juice contains 110 calories.
- Wrap scale down: Use an 8-inch tortilla instead of a 10-inch one.
- Add the real thing to your yogurt: One cup of fruit flavored low fat yogurt contains 230 calories. Instead, consider having one cup of low fat
plain yogurt with 1/2 cup of fresh fruit for only 180 calories plus
extra fiber!
- Make the mayo light: Lightening up your mayonnaise saves you 50 calories per tablespoon.
- Lighten up on butter and margarine: Regular butter or margarine contains 100 calories per tablespoon, but light butter or margarine has only 50.
- Starching down: Try cutting back on your portion of rice, pasta or noodles by just 1/4 cup.
- Soda shocker: Drink an 8 oz mini can of regular soda rather than the usual 12 oz size/
- Wine Not?: Drink 4 oz of wine instead of 12 oz of beer.
