VTS in the News

by Hawley Hussey
from From Studio to Classroom

VTS at BRIC 1BRIC Contemporary Art Educators gather to examine student work at our end of year exhibition INVENT/ONSITE. We always have an "outside eye" guide us through our search for the evidence of the learning from our public school residency work. In this way individual voices illuminate the mysterious process of art in education residencies with contemporary artists, classroom teachers and students. In this photo Amy Chase Gulden, the New York Regional Director of VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) asks us "What do we notice or see in this student work?"

VTS at BRIC 2There is a unique language and energy shared by students, art educators, artists, classroom teachers, Teaching artists, or as we refer to ourselves at BRIC Contemporary Art: Artist Teachers. There is a visual and conceptual language inside us and when it is deeply activated it creates energy like our favorite meal or like a walk in a sacred location. We are nourished by the opportunity to share ideas about our teaching and our art practice. We begin, middle and end our school year with inspired gatherings for our faculty and extended community. Wherever and whenever we can, we gather to eat, drink, make art, discuss our methods in our studios, in our work place and in the classrooms. Our shared delight in this practice is brought to each and every one of our school partners. We have found this to be true: when you create excellent and inspired gatherings for your various teams you nurture each individual to take risks and to deepen their investment in the collaborative process.
