Tricia and John on Camels Infront of the PyramidsDr. Drew on Grants
"We Find Ways to Grant You Money."May 2011
Greetings!

I am going to be speaking in Anchorage, Alaska this month at the Neighborhoods, USA 2011 Conference.  The theme for the conference is "Great Land, Great Neighborhoods."  My primary topic will be "Dr. Drew's Lightning Fast Grant Writing."

Dr. Drew will be speaking at the in Anchorage, Alaska this month and looking out for the stray moose.

As an activist in Laguna Niguel, I understand how much time and effort it takes to protect a community from drugs, crime and violence.  I'm particularly aware of how corruption and waste in government can lead to poverty throughout an entire region.  I'm looking forward to meeting some old friends at the NUSA and seeing for myself the rich resoures of Alaska.

In this newsletter, I'll introduce you to some remarkable people here in Southern California , people who understand what it takes to write and win successful grants.

Mixing Things Up: Drew & Associates Has Added Two New Grant Writing Consultants

Elizabeth J. Connor

Tricia and I finally realized the only way I was going to catch up with my work was to bring in some new people to help me.  "I thought he was just being lazy," she says.  Accordingly, we took a leap and brought on two additional writers to speed up the process of creating, editing and researching our clients' projects.  It was humbling for me to realize that learning to delegate my work was also a secret of "lightning fast grant writing."

Accordingly, I'm proud to announce we have appointed two new associate grant writing consultants, Elizabeth J. Connor and Luciane H. Yeh.  Ms. Connor, pictured above, is an extraordinary writer with a great deal of business experience.  I am amazed at how quickly she is learning to write grants the Drew & Associates' way.   Already, I am able to complete work much more rapidly thanks to her help.

Next, Tricia and I met Ms. Yeh though the kindness of one of our Pathway to Prosperity Board Members, Grant D. McNiff.  Ms. Yeh has a law degree and an MBA degree from Northwestern University.  She was a tremendous help to Mr. McNiff when he was in charge of the Southern California Sober Living Coalition.  We welcome them both with bright expectations for long and fruitful carreers with Drew & Associates.

Seeds of Success: How Creativity Helped Imperial Valley College Win $3 Million for New Technology
Dawn Chun of Imperial Valley College with Dr. Drew in January 2011.

Even as a young graduate student, I have been fascinated by the techniques used to achieve "elite" performance.

To my surprise, many secrets of success have boiled down to matters of technique and focus and not matters of inate, raw talent.

In my experience, elite grant writers know the basics of the craft, but then they also bring a little something extra to the grant writing process, a something extra that puts their applications over the top.

In this picture, I'm sitting next to one of my grant writing "heroes," Dawn Chun of Imperial Valley College.  Ms. Chun's team recently won a $3 million technology grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support her community college's modernization efforts.  Ms. Chun has a track record of success in seeing ahead of the curve and implementing innovative, creative ideas.

Insisting on creativity is one of the secrets of success that has allowed me to outperform other grant writers.  I am thankful to Dawn Chun and the example she sets for leadership and creative excellence under pressure.
