greenhouse in decemberWe hope your holidays have been full of peace and joy.

Reevis was blessed in December with over eight inches of rain - two and a half of which fell during Christmas Day and the following night. With the ground already saturated, the creek rose to a height that Peter hadn't seen since the Great Flood of 1993. Using the Unimog, on Christmas night Peter valiantly ferried two of our holiday guests out to their cars at the boat shop - and then faced returning, with the creek even higher than when he had left. On some of the crossings, the water was over the headlights, and Peter was driving in the dark and rain through a waist-deep (that's Peter's waist!), rushing current. We've decided the Unimog is worth the six thousand dollars we paid for it!

That was Christmas evening ... the next morning, the creek was even higher. Our friend Andras had slept in Sycamore Cabin - on the other side of the creek. First, we figured we would just toss him chickens, squashes, and water bottles and he'd be fine. Then Peter had a better idea ... he and Andras strung a rope across the creek, about six feet off the water. They slid Andras's backpack across ... and then Andras grabbed hold and climbed over.

To help celebrate the new year, we're announcing our spring class schedule. We hope you will find a class here to interest you - or find another opportunity to visit us as the orchard blossoms.

Reevis Mountain School
A doctor may not be available when you need one - now you can learn to take care of yourself! Oriental touch healing (jin shin jyutsu) is a simple and profoundly effective healing art founded on the understanding of the human body as animated by life force energy that constantly flows through meridians in and around the body. Most illness is caused by a restriction in the free flow of life force. OTH is an art designed to reestablish that free flow and return us to our natural state of being: painless, joyous, and loving. You will learn the philosophy of OTH, the meridians and pulse points, diagnosis through reading the pulses, techniques of touch healing, and first aid with OTH. Includes Bigfoot's Book of Ancient Natural Remedies, which provides treatment flows and a diagram of the pulse points. Three days.

What We're Growing, Harvesting, and Eating
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
cliffside yurpy We'd like to share with you what's going on in the garden, the orchard, and the kitchen - the vegetables we're planting, the bounty (fruit, veggies, livestock, and herbs!) we're harvesting, and how we turn our harvest into nourishing, delicious meals.
What We're Growing
Despite the recent night-time temperatures that have frosted our garden, the chard, rutabagas, turnips, bok choy, and cheeseweed are enduring. The greenhouse is as green and growing as ever, with beets, chard, spinach, lettuces, and herbs. Onions, leeks, garlic, and shallots are all lifting their happy green stalks.
What We're Harvesting
We still have persimmons for sale, and they keep getting sweeter and tastier as the season progresses. We also have sweet winter squash for sale. In addition to winter greens, we are enjoying root vegetables - carrots, parsnips, rutabagas - along with our farm-raised turkey and duck. We have recently harvested vitex (chaste tree) seeds and violet leaves.
What We're Eating
Every meal at RMS is built around greens, whole grains, and meat or eggs. Steamed or Dutch-ovened greens with chopped squash continue to be a winter staple. When it is warm enough, Michael cooks whole grains in our solar oven - otherwise, we often make cornbread with mesquite flour - amazing!
Peter's Amazing Mesquite Cornbread
Combine: 2 1/2 cups corn meal, 1 cup mesquite flour, 1 cup olive oil, 4 eggs, 2 cups milk (or other liquid), 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon sea salt, 3 tablespoons raw sugar, and a teaspoon of fennel seeds. Pour into a 9 x 13 baking pan coated inside with olive oil and whole flaxseeds. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
