News from Reevis Mountain School
October 2008

The air is cool, the gnats are gone, and the persimmons are almost
ripe. In the past few months, we've built a lion-proof pen for our turkeys,
with the help of visitors from Missouri ... we cut down the grand sycamore tree that died last year after
standing outside the farmhouse for who knows how many years ... and we made the
Society page of the Globe newspaper, with a photo of Peter and Patricia at the September farmer's market!
We also butchered the cow that Peter brought to the farm in May. She had been donated to us as a calf by a rancher who thought she was too sick to be saved. Peter spent four hours with her at the stockyard, feeding her chaparral tea and giving her touch healing treatments, and then he loaded her in the back of the Montero and brought her to the farm. She had relapsed during the drive, but Peter gave her more treatments and she improved quickly. He named her Cowpie (cow + sweetie pie). It was a joy to watch her grow up so healthy - chasing turkeys across the yard, grabbing pomegranates off the tree outside the house, and sneaking into the orchard for pears and persimmons. Michael fed her two or three wheelbarrows of fresh greens every day. Hard to imagine a cow having it better. And we're grateful to her for the hundreds of pounds of delicious beef that she left with us.
The next few months will bring fall events
including Thanksgiving dinner (you're invited!) and a visit to the Fall Foliage Finale at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. We'll be processing our turkeys,
harvesting a lot of winter squash, and (we hope) bringing sheep to the
farm!

What We're Growing, Harvesting, and Eating
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We'd like to share with you what's going on in the garden, the orchard, and the kitchen - the vegetables we're planting, the bounty (fruit, veggies, livestock, and herbs!) we're harvesting, and how we turn our harvest into nourishing, delicious meals.
What We're Growing As the weather cools and the days grow shorter, we're planting winter crops - rutabagas, beets, leeks, turnips, kale, and one last crop of lettuce. ... The yams, after getting frosted a week or two ago, have been growing new greens with the recent warmer temperatures. We'll leave them in the ground a little longer. ... Winter squashes are going gangbusters!
What We're Harvesting
We've begun to harvest the winter squash ... we've just finished the Comice pears ... and the persimmons are almost ripe.
What We're Eating Every meal at RMS is built around greens, whole grains, and meat or eggs. Lately we've been steaming chard, beet greens, and rutabaga thinnings together for a super healthy greens dish. Our whole grains are cooked every day by Michael in our solar oven, and soaked overnight ahead of time, so they cook more quickly and are easier to digest. The solar oven saves an enormous amount of energy (and money - we just had our propane tank refilled to the tune of a shocking $1500!). Michael also uses a "hot box" - a large cardboard box packed with foam insulation, with a smaller box inside to hold the Dutch oven - to slow-cook dishes or keep food warm until meal time, which also saves a lot of energy. Peter killed a 43-pound turkey last week as part of a demonstration for a survival class - so we've had turkey on our plates for every meal since then! And we're also enjoying ground beef and steaks from our cow, which we butchered earlier this month.
