Book of the Month

by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Sometimes, when you're making book recommendations to your students, you find that they've already read all the latest titles. What to do? Why not turn to an older title? It's new to them!

Halfway to the Sky by Kimberly Bradley is one great example. Twelve-year-old Katahdin was named after the great mountain at the northern end of the world-famous Appalachian Trail. Her parents met on the trail and named both her and her brother (Springer, for the mountain at the southern end) after this special place. But when Katahdin (called Dani by her family on most days) and her brother were still young, her brother was diagnosed with

muscular dystrophy. He was supposed to live for many more years, but suddenly died, ripping her family apart. With her father gone (remarried with a new baby on the way) Dani and her mother barely know each other any more.

Dani's answer? Run away. But she doesn't just run away. She carefully plans to walk away . . . on the entire Appalachian Trail. Halfway to the Sky is one girl's story of finding answers in the pain. Dani discovers how to grow up but still be her mother's little girl.

So come join them for a fun-filled discussion as they discuss the merits of their top picks and name their winner! Visit our website to see which titles made the final cut as nominees!
