Hello :

Well I sure put my foot in my month last month by telling you that the scorpion situation was back to normal after their onslaught following July's haboob ... because it's not. Matter of fact is that we're inundated with reports of scorpion sightings and that's extremely rare.

All of us are here for you so don't hesitate to call with any concerns, but I thought some "self-help" tips on minimizing and preventing scorpions might be useful and have listed the most important ones below:

Clean Harborage Areas: Scorpions always seek dark places and crawl under items that offer cover such as debris, trash and junk, items stored in garages and laying on the side of homes. Keeping these areas clear of attractive shelters will remove a potential gathering place for scorpions.

Trim Bushes, Hedges, and Trees: Keep the bottoms of bushes and hedges trimmed far enough off the ground so that light gets into the space between them. This will discourage scorpions since they prefer darkness.

Bark scorpions can easily climb onto your roof from tree branches and then enter the home. Branches on trees near your home should be trimmed back to minimize the opportunity for a scorpion to gain entry from the roof.

Black Light: This item is used at night in total darkness to find scorpions. Its beam causes the scorpion to glow with a green-gold florescent color making them very easy to see at night. If you're so inclined, just stomp on the ones you find illuminated and they'll no longer present a threat. Black lights can be purchased from most hardware stores

Home Seal: Sorry to break the news but all homes have gaps of varying sizes that provide scorpions easy entry into your home. The most common places to find such gaps are as follows:

  • Between the stucco and stem-wall
  • Around doors
  • Throughout the interior of a garage
  • Exhaust vents

A good home seal does what the name suggests and will minimize the chances of scorpions entering your residence through structural gaps. Hardware stores carry home seal products from various manufacturers.

Sonoran's Monthly Maintenance: While performing the preventive monthly service our technicians are careful to observe conditions around your home that can attract scorpions and will alert you accordingly.

Sonoran's "Kill Zone": I know what you're thinking here but... wrong - no product or service pitching. This is our highly effective patented process that provides a layer of protection from scorpions around the home's perimeter and is reinforced each month with our maintenance service.

Except for our services you can certainly implement any of these suggestions yourself and be ahead of the seemingly endless battle with scorpions. If you do so and need some advice or "how to" instruction just call and I'll be happy to help. Of course, it will be much easier and probably give you greater peace of mind to let us do the job in the first place.

That's it for September. Fortunately cooler weather is just around the corner and it can't come soon enough for me.

Your business is appreciated and will never be taken for granted.

Sincerely,

Bret
