Hello :

While it's not my practice to mention clients outside of pest control matters I'm making an exception this month. I've been very moved by the selfless dedication of Jeanette Wood and her faithful Australian Shepherd companion, Callie, in helping disaster victims and feel that theirs is a human interest story worthy of mention. After reading the next few paragraphs I think you'll agree with me.

Jeanette & Callie
Jean
Jeanette and Callie have been comforting abused children in the Valley for the past four years and on October 11, 2010, became Arizona's first Animal-Assisted Crisis Response Team to be certified by HOPE. HOPE is a noble volunteer organization consisting of teams that provide comfort and stress relief to victims of community disasters. Examples run the gamut from 9/11 and the Virginia Tech shootings to schools following the violent or sudden death of a student or staff member. Inexplicably, the dogs bring a peaceful comfort to victims that human beings cannot deliver. For additional information visit HOPE's web site at
www.hopeaacr.org

The certification process for Jeanette and Callie took place in California where they underwent four days of screening and intensive work with animal behaviorists, psychologists, and other professionals dedicated to HOPE's worthy cause. Standards are extremely high and only teams that prove they can handle the demand and incredible stress associated with responding to a crisis earn certification.

Coincidentally, within an hour of being certified Jeanette and Callie were dispatched to a Crisis Response situation at Kelly Elementary School in Carlsbad, California, where two students had been shot at the playground. When the children returned to school HOPE teams provided much needed comfort and encouragement so the play area would again be associated with fun and positive feelings.

Now For 'dem Bugs!

Scorpions and Cooler Weather: There's a common myth that scorpion activity stops in the cooler months, but many people have painfully discovered that not to be the case. They continue hunting for food as well as seek warmth, particularly in the evenings. The radiant heat absorbed by your home's stucco walls emits warmth and attracts them. In addition, your home has several tiny entry points that a scorpion can fit through and become a very unwelcome visitor.  For instance, a 1.5" scorpion can easily fit through a 1/16" opening so please be alert and don't assume they can't enter your home.

Scorpions in Your Home: If you see a scorpion inside of your home - and have the nerve - watch how it's acting for a few seconds - then smash it with a shoe. The behavior exhibited will tell you whether or not it has been exposed to the materials we use to zap these rascals. Lethargic behavior will indicate that the product is working well and death is very near - so not to worry. On the other hand an alert scorpion will respond to your presence by standing, curling its tail in an upward direction then run for cover. In all probability this fella got through your barrier unscathed or more likely has only recently been exposed to the product. Regardless, call us if the scorpion is alert and we'll take care of the situation.

A Slow Death: While smashing a scorpion assures instant death, killing them with an effective product takes a few days. This is because they don't ingest the product, but rather it penetrates their minuscule joints and attacks the critters central nervous system ultimately causing death.  Unfortunately, there is not a more expedient way of killing them when using a product.

That's it for now. Enjoy the cooler weather.

Your business is appreciated and will never be taken for granted.

Sincerely,
Bret
