Greetings!
It's me - Lexi - chillin' among the pumpkins and thinking about a cool costume to wear on Halloween. Last year I dressed as a baby, but I'm too old for that - so maybe a vampire would look good. My Dad's going with me and he promised to behave - last Halloween he ate all of my chocolate candy and intentionally left me with apples and nuts that I couldn't eat because my teeth had not come in yet. Since I don't trust Dad on this he agreed to leave his teeth at home so all he'll be able to work on while we're out "trick or treatin" will be suckers. Whether he keeps his word is another matter, particularly with his "munchies".
Even though Dad has filled you to the brink with information about Arizona's nasty Bark scorpion - sometimes he can be a bit boring and easy to lose, if you know what I mean, so below is a simple list of truths and falsehoods about these critters.
1. They hibernate all winter and are only active from May through September. False - scorpions are most active during those months, but are scavenging around all year - and don't care when they sting you. 2. Scorpions are not toxic. False - Arizona's bark scorpion is North America's only toxic scorpion and their sting can be fatal. 3. The impact of stepping on a scorpion carrying babies on her back will cause them to spread all over the place and make matters worse. False - kill scorpions any way and every way possible when you have the chance, and the sole of your shoe is a perfect weapon because it leaves very little room for escape. 4. Eliminating their food supply will eventually kill them off. False - scorpions can live for months without food through hydration and there's no shortage of available sources. 5. Chemicals will not kill scorpions. False - if the appropriate product penetrates their tiny joins death will follow. However, a program using such a product will help manage their movement and kill them. 6. Scorpions can jump. False - the Bark scorpion is an excellent climber, however, and can easily scale walls and cling to ceilings. 7. Scorpions make good house pets because they'll eat crickets. False - enough said.
What's really important is to remain alert all year for the presence of scorpions because a bite is serious business. Unlike my Dad, they never take a holiday so don't relax your efforts towards controlling them. It's easy to do - just call my Dad - that's it! He'll do the rest. Here's his contact information:
