Greetings!
Sure was nice having the summer heat arrive a few weeks later than normal this year, but it's here big time to stay for a while. Ever notice how at the beginning of summer and fall the air just seems to suddenly feel different one day? Guess its just Mother Nature doing her thing.
Wedding Anniversary: My bride Cindy and I celebrated our 9th anniversary in Santa Monica a few weeks ago. Truth is I wanted to stay here - just hang out around the house and save money - but she wasn't impressed so off we went. Anyway, we stayed at the Casa del Mar on the ocean by the pier and had a great time. Our stay was so relaxing, and I'm embarrassed to admit, we didn't leave the grounds except to check out. We're returning after the 4th with our daughter, Lexi, so she can have her first dip in the surf and help me build sand castles.
Rattlesnake Caution: There seems to be more of these nasty critters around this year so watch your step, particularly during hikes, and by all means don't mess with them. There's been a lot of discussion recently about how much worse the affects of their bites have been t and the toxicologists don't have a clue as to why.
Mojave Rattlesnake: While the Western Diamondback is the most prevalent, this is the culprit doing the real damage in Arizona. The Mojave is greenish yellow in color and is nocturnal. It injects less venom than the Western Diamond back, but one bite contains enough to kill 9 adults.
Symptoms: Not to alarm you, but here are some of the symptoms many bite victims experienced: extreme pain at the bit, nausea, diarrhea, swelling of the mouth and throat to the extent that breathing is impeded, light headedness, collapse, and shock - all within minutes of the strike. Following the shock victims have experienced severe strokes and kidney failure in some instances.
Pets: Snakes don't discriminate. Two years ago one of our dogs was bitten in the foot by a Rattler and almost died. Both of them have since been trained to run like the devil at the sound of a rattle, and I highly recommend this type of training if your dogs play outdoors.
Bribe: Yup - I'm offering my shameless bribe again: $50 Amex certificate for every referral who sees the light and does business with us. Not much but it still beats a poke in the eye - but just barely these days. I remember when $50 was nearly a tank of gas - oh well, as Dylan sings, "The times they are a changing".
Stay cool and safe.
