Monsoon and Scorpions
Please be extra cautious and on guard for scorpions during our present monsoon conditions because they love hot temperatures, moisture, and dark places. These rascals hide during the day and are real active at night, particularly in this damp weather. They like to hang around and under rocks, bark, woodpiles, brush, trash and other debris. Landscaping rocks and mulch create perfect harborages and it's critical to be alert when you're around these places. While we thoroughly treat every area, it's important that debris, bark, brush, piles of wood and trash be removed when possible to minimize the risk of coming in contact with these nasty critters.
Arizona Bark Scorpion
Don't want to sound like an alarmist, but here's the scoop on our local scorpion, commonly known as the Arizona Bark Scorpion. These mean varmints thrive in this climate and not surprisingly there's an abundance of them trying to free-load around our homes. As luck would have it, this is the only species in the US whose venom is potent enough to be considered very dangerous to humans. Just so you'll know, they grow up to three inches in length, are yellow to brownish-yellow with dark longitudinal stripes, and have long slender pincers. But there's no reason to concern yourself with any scorpion's appearance - just keep your distance and be safe.
Affects Of A Sting
I gotta' tell you, it hurts like the devil. The immediate pain is severe and the site will be extremely sensitive to touch. Individual reactions that follow will differ depending on one's system and can include swelling, numbness, frothing at the mouth, difficulty breathing, muscle twitching, convulsions and respiratory failure. There's plenty of anti-venoms readily available to ease the adverse affects of a sting, but just be alert and avoid being stung in the first place.
Let's work together to keep these critters in check so you and your family will be safe. As always, don't hesitate to call me with any questions or concerns.
Thanks again for your support - it's sincerely appreciated.
