                               Peace and Joy

Peace and joy.  That is how I often sign off emails or letters.  What do I really imagine when I wish you Peace and Joy in my signature line?  My desire is to send you tidings of Peace... solace, contentment, serenity, bliss; and Joy... happiness, glee, sunshine in your soul.

As a young girl at summer camp we were told a story about warm fuzzies.  There are many versions of this tale, perhaps you too have heard one of them.  The essence of the story is of a community who shares smiles, hugs and good wishes for each other. The community is joyful, with its members enjoying happy, healthy lives.   As in so many childhood tales- enter the wicked witch type character who is infuriated with so much happiness and warns the townsfolk that these warm fuzzies will run out if they continue to share them willy nilly and like so many townsfolk of folk story lore, these are easily swayed to change their casual ways and instead turn cold and prickly.  Soon the community deteriorates into a group of unhappy, pain ridden crotchety souls.   As I remember it, it is an innocent child who reminds the townsfolk of the richer life of shared love and compassion.  Reminding them that love is meant to be shared and in the process multiplies, that it is only when is it clutched tight that it withers and dies.  And so... Peace and Joy are restored.

It is a simple and childish tale... and, perhaps, a deep and profound message.

I had the privilege of being invited to hear the Dalai Lama speak last week.  And his message is indeed so simple it is profound.  His message as I understood it was simply that we cannot achieve Peace through struggle (war/violence/hatred/mistrust).  He suggests that we can only begin to heal our world through love, understanding and connection with one and all of humanity.  By letting go of our beliefs of differences and recognizing that we are all the same, and that caring for each other and our environment is all that really matters.   Simple?  Perhaps.  Easy?  Probably not.  Worth it?  How can we believe otherwise?

...For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow only a vision
But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope...
Translated from Sanskrit The Salutation to the Dawn

We are the ones who through our thoughts, beliefs and actions today can make every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope.  Transformation is possible by sharing a message of love, understanding and connection, putting aside our ideas of differences and celebrating our commonality, sharing our unending supply of warm fuzzies.
The Salutation to the Dawn tells us to ...Look well therefore to this day...
Indeed, my friends, Look well therefore to this day.  Make today 'well lived' for you, for your family, for your community both near and far.

Peace and Joy.
