Positive Change
What you practice you become. If I continually say I am stressed, I become more stressed. If I am continually in a state of panic, fear, and chaos... my life becomes more panicked, more frightening, more chaotic. What I focus on I get more of whether I realize I am focusing on it or not. Do you find yourself agonizing over decisions?... you are what you practice. Have you ever noticed how often you allow others to 'let you' fix what they have left incomplete... you are what you practice (and so are they). Do you sit back and wait for others to be in the spotlight instead of letting your light shine? What are you practicing in your life? So how do you turn that around? Generally, it can best be turned around in small baby steps so as not to be too daunting, too overwhelming. That is not to say that it cannot be turned around in the blink of an eye if you are ready and willing to take that big leap- but for most of us taking one small step at a time is more comfortable. A little positive self talk goes a long way. Affirmations can be a great way to promote that positive inner voice. Some people think affirmations do not work for them because they have chosen affirmations in which they cannot believe. An affirmation is a positive statement that you have already achieved that which you desire, for instance, if you wanted a promotion at work, an affirmation you might use would be "I am happily working as a [insert desired position here]." But, what if you believe you are not qualified enough or capable of performing the job well enough to be considered? Start by questioning your limiting belief. Are there experiences from your past that suggest that this belief is true? Have you heard this message from someone? Do you honestly believe that this is who you are when you examine your authentic self? Take a moment to look deep inside... not think about, but look into your heart and ask if that belief is really true about you. If you still feel it is true then ask what would change that. And start with an affirmation for change. So breaking this down into smaller steps would mean starting with an affirmation like "As I learn and grow at work, I am happily getting closer to being the perfect candidate for ....." Of course this needs to be accompanied with action, the action of actually learning and growing at work as well as regularly updating your affirmation to eventually be able to say, and believe, that you have become the ideal candidate for the job. Of course it is also ok if through the process your vision of what you want to do or be changes. More often when we take that deeper look into our authentic self we find out that those limiting beliefs are not actually who we are, but something we were told and chose, for whatever reason to hold onto for so long that it worked its way into a belief. In that case you can start to replace it with more empowering beliefs. Instead of using an affirmation of "I am powerful, focused and competent" if that feels unbelievable to you, use "I choose to feel powerful, focused and competent." When you practice feeling powerful, focused and competent, you become more powerful, focused and competent. What you practice, you become. By simply making conscious choices about what you are practicing you can have power instead of panic, focus instead of fear and competence instead of chaos. Of course, the choice is yours.

The more we practice, within the safe and supportive container of a workshop, and with active facilitation and coaching, the quicker we are able to change our habits. Affirmations will be one of the areas of focus in our upcoming group coaching program Women of Wonder. Watch for details to come in the next month in Peaceful Ponderings.
