Lights On LogoThis time last month we were all gearing up for the Afterschool Alliance's 12th Annual Lights On Afterschool celebration. Lights On is a national event that highlights the benfits of afterschool programming. With over 7,500 communities participating we thought we'd share two with you. In Maryland we highlight both Montgomery County and Caroline County for their spectacular Lights On events. Read about them both here.

Working Groups Summit
It's here! The agenda for the 2012 Maryland Out of School Time Leadership Summit has been released. Join us at the Rockville Crowne Plaza January 5 & 6, 2012. This year's summit features Paul Young, CEO of the National Afterschool Association and workshops presented by Afterschool Alliance, The Afterschool Corporation (TASC),  The After-School Institute, Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities and many more. The Maryland Education Coalition hosts it annual General Meeting on December 1, 2011, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Owen Brown Community Center in Columbia. Join in workshops and panel discussions on current education funding and policy issues.  The event is free, light refreshments will be served. Register today.  

 

Social Solutions announces the kick off of the Superstar Foundation's 2011 Veronica Awards! The Superstar Foundation was founded 4 years ago to help expand the use of "transformational relationships" as the core of social services. Each year they give four $5000 awards out to direct service workers who are able to demonstrate their effectiveness through essays and the submission of data. Development Without Limits has launched a new podcast series "Please Speak Freely" podcast featuring honest conversations about youth development and education.  Recent podcast speakers include Earl Phalen of Reach Out and Read, Dr. Pedro Noguera of New York University, Karen Pittman of the Forum for Youth Investment, and Carla Sanger of LA's Best. Bring it All Together: Family and Community Engagement Policies in Action webinar, November 16, 1 - 2 p.m. This webinar will examine the different roles of federal, state, and local entities in promoting FSCE policy; highlight innovative examples of systemic, integrated, and sustained FSCE in action at every level; and identify opportunities for practitioners, program staff, advocates, and education officials to weave FSCE policies into their own work. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers announce the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing awards. Submissions are being accepted now with deadlines ranging from December through January. Check eligibility guidelines and sign up by visiting the alliance website.
