Featured Artist, August 2012
"I walked into an art store in Fishkill, New York," Weinstein says. ”Inspired by the aroma of the oils, I tried to buy some paint and canvas, but the owner instead offered me a charcoal pencil and paper. He told me, ’If you still want to paint in a month, come back.’” Weinstein did return, and began teaching himself to paint. Other than a few classes at the New York Museum of Modern Art and in New York’s Hudson Valley, Weinstein is self taught. His talent and technique is evident, however, in his many abstract impressionistic oil and pastel still life paintings. A New Yorker through and through, Weinstein is also known for his New York City scenes, capturing the excitement of city nightlife, the symmetry of umbrellas in the rain, the grace of a dance class or the quiet of a man reading a newspaper on a bench. The influence of film is apparent in his work: He depicts drama, light and movement in his cityscapes and still lifes. Subjects such as dancers, horses and umbrellas are common themes. Weinstein has exhibited in a one-man show in New York’s SoHo district and Toronto, Canada. He is currently being shown at the Wit Gallery in Massachusetts and here at the Geary Gallery in Connecticut. His works were accepted into the prestigious Plymouth Juried Arts Show, where he was invited back for a second showing. His canvases have sold at auction and are in numerous private collections all over North America. Private collectors regularly commission works, and visit his home studio in North Easton, Massachusetts. Weinstein has directed famous pop and rock stars in concert for major networks and directed hundreds of hours of television specials and series, including talk/variety shows and original musicals. He was nominated for an Emmy and a Peabody Award for his television direction, and received a Creative Excellence award three years in a row and a Canadian Industrial Film Award for his work on corporate films. Between 1998 and 2005, he was an adjunct professor at Emerson College in Boston. He is a graduate of New York University. To view Robert Weinstein’s paintings, visit our online gallery. The exhibit runs through the end of August. Artwork will be available for acquisition and there is no admission fee to Geary Gallery exhibits. The gallery is open to the public Wednesdays – Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and is located at 576 Boston Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
