Featured Artist, June 2012
Paul Lipp
Born in West Haven and a resident of Old Lyme, Paul Lipp’s classic realist oil paintings are a loving tribute to the natural and architectural beauty of the small towns and boroughs of New England. Whether a nautical scene of aging wooden boats in the still water of a quiet harbor; a lobsterman in a dory riding the waves toward home, or the sun-dappled leaves of a maple hovering over a country road, Lipp’s paintings are detailed reflections of scenes and trips that have called to him. "I never know what I am going to paint," Lipp explains, "I am dictated to by the scene." His style is classic realist; his still life compositions masterful with elements of trompe l’oeil.
After serving in the Marine Corps for three years, Lipp returned to Connecticut and attended the Paier School of Art in Hamden. He was valedictorian of his class, and was invited back for a fifth-year scholarship in advanced illustration. Lipp was then recruited to become an assistant professor at the Paier School, where he taught art for 18 years. During that time, Lipp continued to develop his own fine art skills and accepted private commissions from popular publications, such as Golf Digest and PGA magazine. He also built an impressive list of corporate clients, including Great Northern Paper, Connecticut Distributors, Merrill Lynch, Conoco, Alberta Gas, IBM, Microdot, New England Dairies, Exxon, Pfizer, Pitney Bowes, Hummel Brothers, Combustion Engineering and W.R. Berkley.
Lipp’s paintings are included in more than five hundred private and corporate collections around the world, and his work has been exhibited in major shows at the Connecticut Academy, Springfield Museum, Mystic Maritime Gallery, Quinnipiac College and the Lyme Art Association, among others. He is also the recipient of awards from the National Society of Illustrators, the Benedictine Fine Arts Competition and the Mount Carmel Art Association.

The exhibit runs through the end of June. Artwork will be available for acquisition and there is no admission fee to Geary Gallery exhibits. The gallery is open to the public Wednesdays – Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and is located at 576 Boston Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
