Welcome to the March issue of the Geary Gallery Guide.
We thank all of you who visited us last month for Barbara Lussier’s "The Splendor of Winter" exhibit.

Our March exhibit entitled "Environmentalism Through Art" features the work of local artists, Diane Aeschliman and Marlene Wiedenbaum. We invite you to view a selection of their work highlighting the beauty of New England and New York's Hudson Valley.

We are also excited to invite you to Geary Gallery on March 31 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. for the opening reception honoring Judith Carbine, who’s work will be on display during the month of April. We are delighted, as this will be the first opportunity Geary Gallery visitors have had to meet Ms. Carbine in person in three years.

Thank you again for your patronage and support, and we ask you to consider Geary Gallery when you are searching for a unique gift, or need a treasured photograph or painting framed. Browse our new Pre-Auction Wall to silently bid on some lovely works of art, or commission an original portrait for your loved one.

Sincerely,

Anne & Tom Geary

The Pre-Auction Wall
If you are like many of our customers who would be interested in acquiring a previously-owned piece of art but can’t go to an auction, or are even intimidated by the auction process, come visit our Pre-Auction Wall. We now feature a gallery wall dedicated to exhibiting works of art previously owned by our local Fairfield County clientele, many of whom have had the pieces in their families for generations. This new service gives our customers the opportunity to silently bid on a piece of art that they’re interested in acquiring.

At the same time, the previous owner is afforded a service that makes the process of selling their artwork financially beneficial and convenient. We first appraise it for its fair market value and determine the minimum starting bid.

We are proud to be working with Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers of Connecticut, who grossed over 7.6 million dollars in sales in 2011. We currently have dozens of pieces of auction items, and the display is rotated regularly on the Pre-Auction Wall, so there is always new artwork to bid on. Art enthusiasts, collectors and those interested in viewing items available for bidding are encouraged to visit Geary Gallery.

Custom Original Portrait Service
Portraits at Geary Gallery
Geary Gallery’s Custom Original Portrait Service makes it easy and affordable to commission a portrait of a family, an individual, pet or home. Individual portraits are available in oil, pastel or graphite. Houses in pen & ink or acrylic, and pet portraits are available in oil. The artists were chosen due to their mastery of their particular subject and medium, and their portfolios are available to view at our portraits gallery.

Let Your Art Come to You
To help parents with babies and small children who are unable to easily leave their car, Geary recently announced Curbside Pick-up, which allows customers to call from their car when they’re in the gallery parking lot to pick up their work, and a gallery employee will bring it to them. Call (203) 655-6633.

Diane Aeschliman

Grassy Hill by Diane AeschlimanA resident of Killingworth, Connecticut, Diane Aeschliman is actively involved in the New England art world, recently serving for three years on the Board of Directors of the Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme. Diane was an Associate Professor of Drawing and Painting at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts for 14 years, but eventually decided to devote more time and creative energy to her own work.

Known for her landscapes and portraits, Aeschliman’s expertise is with "The Grisaille" approach — a method of creating a tonal painting using one color. By working thin transparent paint over a white ground, an artist allows light to emanate through the layers, producing a painting that glows.

Her artistic philosophy is that freedom of expression and the best painting spring from the knowledge and mastery of drawing, or, that drawing is to painting what the root is to the flower. She believes in working from life as much as possible, whether portrait, still life or landscape.

Aeschliman’s work has won dozens of awards and her paintings are in private and corporate collections here and abroad. As a member of The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, she has won four awards, including a first and second in their recent exhibitions. She is also a member of The New England Plein Air Painters — an elite group of 25 landscape painters. In addition to extensive landscape work in New England, she has led a number of fellow painters on intensive working trips to Italy and Ireland.

Marlene Wiedenbaum

Glowing Hudson Sunrise by Marlene WiedenbaumHighland, New York resident Marlene Wiedenbaum is an award-winning pastel artist and environmental advocate known for her landscapes, particularly of New York’s Hudson River Valley. Wiedenbaum is involved with Sacred Ground, an on-going exhibition of plein-air paintings of preserved lands throughout the Hudson Valley. In collaboration with The Olana Partnership, Scenic Hudson, and Columbia County Land Conservancy, Sacred Ground pays artistic tribute to the beauty of the Hudson Valley, as well as supports land preservation, planned development and education regarding the importance of land stewardship.

In 2007, Wiedenbaum made an environmental public service announcement: "During the past 25 years of painting in the Hudson Valley," said Wiedenbaum, "I have become keenly aware of the loss of nature and the diminishing American landscape. However, as I have witnessed damaging changes over the years, I have also discovered hallowed grounds, those sacred areas respected and protected from population growth and the resulting developmental ruin. I am incredibly grateful to the many organizations and very dedicated and insightful people involved in preserving our landscape, particularly in the Hudson Valley."

Wiedenbaum is on the faculty of the Highland Cultural Center, Dutchess Community College and also teaches workshops in pastel. She is an active member of the Woodstock Artist’s Association, summer group, the New York Society of Women Artists, the Organization of Independent Artists, the Highland Cultural Center, the Pastel Society of America, The Degas Pastel Society and listed in Art in America Guide 2001. Her figurative and landscape paintings have been exhibited in New York, California, New Orleans, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Connecticut.

To read more about Marlene Wiedenbaum, visit her biography on the Geary Gallery site, and view her online gallery.

Admission is to the Gallery free, and the paintings are available for acquisition. The Geary Gallery is regularly open to the public Wednesdays – Saturdays, 9:30 am – 5:00 pm.
