Our March exhibit entitled "Environmentalism Through Art" features the work of local artists, Diane Aeschliman and Marlene Wiedenbaum. We invite you to view a selection of their work highlighting the beauty of New England and New York's Hudson Valley. We are also excited to invite you to Geary Gallery on March 31 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. for the opening reception honoring Judith Carbine, who’s work will be on display during the month of April. We are delighted, as this will be the first opportunity Geary Gallery visitors have had to meet Ms. Carbine in person in three years. Thank you again for your patronage and support, and we ask you to consider Geary Gallery when you are searching for a unique gift, or need a treasured photograph or painting framed. Browse our new Pre-Auction Wall to silently bid on some lovely works of art, or commission an original portrait for your loved one. Known for her landscapes and portraits, Aeschliman’s expertise is with "The Grisaille" approach — a method of creating a tonal painting using one color. By working thin transparent paint over a white ground, an artist allows light to emanate through the layers, producing a painting that glows. Her artistic philosophy is that freedom of expression and the best painting spring from the knowledge and mastery of drawing, or, that drawing is to painting what the root is to the flower. She believes in working from life as much as possible, whether portrait, still life or landscape. Aeschliman’s work has won dozens of awards and her paintings are in private and corporate collections here and abroad. As a member of The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, she has won four awards, including a first and second in their recent exhibitions. She is also a member of The New England Plein Air Painters — an elite group of 25 landscape painters. In addition to extensive landscape work in New England, she has led a number of fellow painters on intensive working trips to Italy and Ireland. In 2007, Wiedenbaum made an environmental public service announcement: "During the past 25 years of painting in the Hudson Valley," said Wiedenbaum, "I have become keenly aware of the loss of nature and the diminishing American landscape. However, as I have witnessed damaging changes over the years, I have also discovered hallowed grounds, those sacred areas respected and protected from population growth and the resulting developmental ruin. I am incredibly grateful to the many organizations and very dedicated and insightful people involved in preserving our landscape, particularly in the Hudson Valley." Wiedenbaum is on the faculty of the Highland Cultural Center, Dutchess Community College and also teaches workshops in pastel. She is an active member of the Woodstock Artist’s Association, summer group, the New York Society of Women Artists, the Organization of Independent Artists, the Highland Cultural Center, the Pastel Society of America, The Degas Pastel Society and listed in Art in America Guide 2001. Her figurative and landscape paintings have been exhibited in New York, California, New Orleans, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Connecticut.
