Welcome to the December issue of the Geary Gallery Guide. We invite you to the gallery this month to view a festive and lively exhibit, perfect for the holiday season. "Light the Night" features the paintings of two prestigious artists: Janine Wessleman’s collection, "City Lights & Cabaret Nights," and Kevin Sanders’, "The Light of Evening."
This month we also unveil the Pre-Auction Room, dedicated to showcasing artwork previously-owned by our local Fairfield County clientele. Similar to a silent auction, it provides you with the opportunity to bid on and acquire these pieces here in the gallery, which is an easy alternative to purchasing art at an auction house.
As you’re out and about doing your holiday shopping, we invite you to browse the gallery for a one-of-a-kind gift that is sure to please. Geary Gallery offers a range of exceptional gift ideas — from the original portraits we can commission to have made for you, to custom frames and restoration of your favorite oil paintings.
As we welcome the holidays, we would like to say that we are truly grateful for your patronage. We wish you and your family all the joys of the season!
Sincerely,
Anne & Tom Geary

Introducing the Pre-Auction Room
This month, Geary Gallery unveils its new Pre-Auction Service, featuring a gallery room dedicated to exhibiting works of art previously owned by its local Fairfield County clientele, many of whom have had the pieces in their families for generations.
Over the years we’ve helped people through the process of selling artwork through the auction houses in Connecticut and New York. However in speaking to our gallery visitors, we’ve realized that many people who would be interested in acquiring a previously-owned piece are either intimidated by, or unable to go to an auction for their purchase. This new service gives our customers the opportunity to bid on a piece of art that they’re interested in acquiring. At the same time, the previous owner is afforded a service that makes the process of selling it financially beneficial and convenient.
We appraise the piece at fair market value and determine the minimum starting bid. Similar to a silent auction, visitors to the gallery can bid on a certain piece that they are interested in acquiring, and if their bid is accepted, they are then contacted by the gallery. We currently have dozens of pieces of auction items, and the display is rotated regularly in the Pre-Auction Room, so there are always new pieces to view. Art enthusiasts, collectors and those interested in viewing items available for bidding are encouraged to visit Geary Gallery. Artwork owners who are interested in consigning a piece to the Gallery to auction can call Tom Geary at (203) 655-6633 or email info@gearygallery.com.
Custom Original Portrait Service
Geary Gallery also recently announced its Custom Original Portrait Service, created by special arrangement with a select group of artists. The service makes it easy and affordable to commission an original work of art, either of a family, an individual, a pet or home. Depending on proximity and individual technique, the selected artists can paint their subject either from a live sitting or a series of photographs. Individual portraits are available in oil, pastel or graphite. Houses in pen & ink or acrylic, and pet portraits are available in oil. The artists were chosen due to their mastery of their particular subject and medium, and their portfolios are available to view at the portraits gallery.
Stay in the Car
To help parents with babies and small children who are unable to carry heavy or large works, Geary recently announced another new service, curbside pick-up, which allows customers to call from their car when they’re in the gallery parking lot, and a gallery employee will bring it to them. Call (203) 655-6633.
Take Pride in Your Art
We believe that artwork should be hung with pride in your home. If you own an oil painting or frame that needs repair, the Geary Gallery houses Accent Picture Framing and Restoration, which provides custom framing with an extensive selection of over 2,000 corner samples for any type of artwork. Its precision restoration service restores oil paintings and frames, and many of its restored objects hang in museums, galleries, and historical societies.

Featured Artist, December
Janine Wesslemann
Known for bringing to light opulent snapshots of splendor, internationally renowned artist Janine Wesslemann evokes a joie de vivre of nights gone by. The "City Lights & Cabaret Nights" exhibit features her exciting and engaging oil paintings. Since the age of six, Janine Wesslemann has painted intensely — and in very unusual circumstances. From ambassadorial soirees in the capitals of Europe and revolutions in third world countries, to living on exotic islands, in remote deserts, and in the cultural metropolises of the world, she has painted a disappearing world of bazaars and fortune tellers, grand balls and gala events, cafes, and revelry.
Her rich color and texture are reminiscent of the Renaissance, her lightness of touch, the Impressionist era, and her psychological insights are unique and masterful. Her passion in painting the cultural richness of vanishing ways of life brought her enormous recognition in Europe and the United States and she was awarded the accolade of Outstanding Contribution to the Arts in 1992. She was the first American woman to be accepted into the permanent Collection d'Art Modern de la Ville de Paris and the Centro Culturale d’Italia, Rome. In 1997 she was named Cultural Emissary to France and continued her dedication to preserving the cultural heritage and art of the French Empire. She has been awarded the endorsements of Ambassadors, Senators, Governors, and Princes, and her work hangs in museums and collections throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States.

Kevin Sanders
"The Light of Evening" exhibit features the oils of renowned landscapist, Kevin Sanders, whose journey in art began when he was very young. Always fascinated by light effects in nature, Kevin never dreamed these senses would lead him to becoming a fine artist. The dream of becoming a landscape painter was simply by chance. While viewing several landscapes in art books, Kevin discovered a landscape painting unlike anything that he had seen before. Immediately, the connection was spiritual. The artist was George Inness. Inspired, he pursued his dreams of becoming a landscape painter.
Working on location near Florence, Italy since the mid-ninety’s, Kevin enjoyed both humbling and rewarding experiences. Working from nature, [Plein Air] and from his imagination, intimate relationships are formed by seeing light effects in nature which create certain moods that trigger emotions. He interprets his feelings or emotions gained from the landscape through painting.
Kevin explained, "It’s when these principles are applied that a painting becomes beautiful. Of course, it’s easier said than done. This can take the artist a life-time to achieve. But if we can awaken an emotion in the viewer, we can become successful artists as did George Inness so long ago."
Kevin chose to become a landscape painter because he wanted to give back to Mother Nature what she has given to him. To learn more about him, visit the Geary Gallery online.
The works of these artists will be on display the month of December. Admission is free, and the paintings are available for acquisition. The Geary Gallery is regularly open to the public Wednesdays – Saturdays, 9:30 am – 5:00 pm. The Gallery is located at 576 Boston Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
